Telangana to use govt lands for Indiramma houses in core urban region

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday directed officials to utilise unused lands owned by various government departments for construction of Indiramma houses in the Core Urban Region Economy zone.
Reviewing the implementation of the Indiramma urban housing scheme, the Chief Minister inquired about the availability of government lands and instructed the authorities to identify unused lands owned by various government departments in the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits.
The officials briefed the Chief Minister about the details of housing sites identified across several Assembly constituencies.
According to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), the meeting decided to utilise the lands owned by the Police, Revenue, and Transport departments for the Indiramma housing scheme. The departments will be given land as an alternative arrangement in other places.
CM Revanth Reddy noted that the construction of Indiramma houses far from residential areas could lead to difficulties regarding employment and livelihood opportunities for the dwellers.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the houses constructed for the poor, which were far away, remained unused. He emphasised the need to construct houses near workplaces within residential areas and ensure the poor do not lose their means of livelihood.
The State government has already announced plans to construct Indiramma houses for the poor across several constituencies within the CURE area. Each flat will be built with a total area of approximately 528 square feet and a carpet area of 400 square feet. While the construction cost is approximately Rs 11 lakh, the government announced providing a substantial subsidy of Rs 5 lakh. The beneficiary is required to pay the remaining Rs 6 lakh. The government is bearing the entire cost of the land.
In the first phase, plans are being finalised to construct and deliver 7,680 flats across 17 constituencies.
In the first phase, 'Indiramma' houses will be built in Rajendranagar, Maheshwaram, Serilingampally, Ibrahimpatnam, Malkajgiri, Nampally, Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills, Karwan, Bahadurpura, Amberpet, Kukatpally, Medchal, Quthbullapur, Sanathnagar, Secunderabad Cantonment, and Malakpet.
The Chief Minister directed officials to expedite the process of identifying unused government land in these Assembly constituencies.
Ministers Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and Ponnam Prabhakar, Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj, DGP CV Anand, CM's Principal Secretaries N. Sridhar and V. Seshadri, and other senior officials participated in this review meeting.

Good initiative, but I have a few concerns. First, Rs 6 lakh is still a lot of money for many poor families to arrange. Second, what about those who don't qualify for any government scheme? The middle class is always left out. Also, I hope this doesn't become another land-grab scam like some previous housing projects. Need to watch the implementation carefully.
Very practical decision by CM Revanth Reddy. Using unused government lands is a smart way to avoid costly land acquisition. As someone who works in real estate, I can tell you land prices in ORR limits have skyrocketed, so this will save crores. Just hope the quality of construction is good - 528 sq ft with 400 sq ft carpet area is decent for working-class families. 👍
Not bad, but I wish the government would focus on rental housing schemes too. Many poor people can't afford even Rs 6 lakh, and a loan at high interest would defeat the purpose. Also, 17 constituencies for the first phase is too few - what about the rest of Hyderabad? But I appreciate the intent, especially locating housing near workplaces. Let's see how transparent the beneficiary selection will be.
This is exactly what we needed! I've seen so many government land parcels lying idle for decades - police grounds, revenue department plots, transport depots. Putting them to housing use is brilliant. And the CM's logic about houses far from employment is spot on - many earlier housing schemes failed because people couldn't commute to work. Hope all parties cooperate for this pro-poor initiative. 👏
