Tamil Nadu CM meets Japanese firm Minebea Mitsumi over Rs 1,980 cr semiconductor project
New Delhi, May 19
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday held a meeting with Minebea Mitsumi Chairman Katsuhiko Yoshida and senior executives of the Japanese firm at the State Secretariat, as part of efforts to strengthen investment cooperation in the state.
According to a post by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) Tamil Nadu on X, the meeting took place on May 19 and included discussions with Japanese and Indian executives linked to the company's planned semiconductor and precision components facility in Tiruvallur, which involves a proposed investment of Rs 1,980 crore.
The post also noted participation of senior company officials, including Shoji Shishido, Executive Director and Chairman of NMB-Minebea India Private Limited, along with Daesuke Matsuda, Head of India Business Development Office, Deputy Head Mokka Kyohara, and Sam George.
The CMO said the interaction formed part of ongoing engagement with the company following the earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed for the project, and highlighted continued coordination on investment plans in the state.
The meeting is being seen as part of the state government's push to attract high-value manufacturing and semiconductor investments and strengthen industrial cooperation with Japanese firms.

Finally some concrete progress on semiconductor manufacturing. But I wonder if the local workforce will get proper training? Also, we need to ensure environmental safeguards are in place. Still, this is a positive step for manufacturing in India 🇮🇳
Good initiative, but I worry about the transparency of such MoUs. The previous government also signed many agreements that remained on paper only. Let's see how quickly this materializes on ground. Still, any investment in high-tech manufacturing is welcome.
Interesting that the CM personally met with the Japanese chairman. Shows serious commitment from Tamil Nadu government to attract foreign investment. Minebea Mitsumi is a reputed brand - their precision motors are used everywhere. This could put Tiruvallur on the global manufacturing map.
Semiconductors are the new oil, and India needs to grab every opportunity. But Rs 1,980 crore seems modest compared to some other semiconductor projects announced. Still, it's a start. More importantly, we need to develop an ecosystem of suppliers and skilled engineers around such projects.
Good to see Japanese firms investing in Tamil Nadu. They bring long-term commitment and quality standards. But I hope the local population benefits through employment and not just contract workers from outside. Also, please ensure proper infrastructure near the facility.
