Taiwan Reports Surge in Chinese Military Incursions Near Its Territory

Taiwan's Ministry of Defence reported 13 Chinese military aircraft and 10 naval vessels operating near its territory, with nine aircraft crossing the median line into its ADIZ. The incursions come amid increased Chinese military activity around Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory. Taiwan maintains a distinct identity with its own government and military, while China asserts its sovereignty based on historical claims. The situation highlights ongoing tensions in the region, with Taiwan conducting submarine sea trials as a defensive measure.

Taiwan detects rise in Chinese military incursions around its territory

Taipei, July 1

Taiwan's Ministry of Defence detected 13 sorties of Chinese military aircraft, 10 naval vessels and three official ships operating around its territorial waters as of 6 am on Wednesday.

Of the 13, nine crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern, southwestern and eastern part Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

In a post on X, the MND said, "13 sorties of PLA aircraft, 10 PLAN vessels and 3 official ships operating around Taiwan detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 9 out of 13 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern, southwestern and eastern part ADIZ. ROC Armed Forces have monitored the situation and responded."

Earlier on Tuesday, the MND detected two sorties of PLA aircraft, 10 naval vessels and three official ships.

In a post on X, he said, "2 sorties of PLA aircraft, 10 PLAN vessels and 3 official ships operating around Taiwan detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. ROC Armed Forces have monitored the situation and responded."

Meanwhile, Focus Taiwan reported how earlier in June, Taiwan's first domestically built submarine departed from the Port of Kaohsiung for its latest round of sea trials that included dive tests.

Citing the Military News Agency, Focus Taiwan said that the trial marked the submarine's 15th sea trial overall and ninth submerged navigation test.

The development comes amid the backdrop of China continuing to increase the intensity of its military activity around Taiwan.

China's claim over Taiwan is a complex issue rooted in historical, political, and legal arguments. Beijing asserts that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, a viewpoint embedded in national policy and upheld by domestic laws and international statements.

Taiwan, however, maintains a distinct identity, functioning independently with its government, military, and economy. Taiwan's status remains a significant point of international debate, testing the principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and non-interference in international law, as per the United Service Institution of India.

China's claim to Taiwan originates from the Qing Dynasty's annexation of the island in 1683 after defeating Ming loyalist Koxinga.

This is worrying. As an Indian, I see parallels with our own situation in Ladakh. China's aggressive posturing is destabilizing the entire region. Taiwan deserves to decide its own future without intimidation. The international community must speak up for democratic values.

China's stance is based on historical claims, but times have changed. Taiwan functions independently. Why should a centuries-old claim override the will of 23 million people? India should support Taiwan's right to self-determination, just as we oppose Chinese aggression in our own territory. 🤔

India needs to tread carefully here. We have economic ties with China but also strategic ties with the US and its allies. Taiwan is a flashpoint that could draw in many countries. Let's not forget our own Doklam and Galwan incidents. Peaceful resolution is the only way forward for everyone's sake. 🙏

The Taiwan issue is a stark reminder of China's expansionist ambitions. From the South China Sea to the Himalayas, they're flexing muscles everywhere. India must strengthen its military and form stronger alliances with like-minded nations to counter this threat. Jai Hind! 🇮🇳

As someone who follows geopolitics, this is classic Chinese coercive diplomacy. The median line was a tacit understanding, and now they're violating it. Taiwan's submarine trials show they're serious about defense. But military solutions don't bring lasting peace. Dialogue is needed, though China seems unwilling.
