Taiwan Reports 8 PLAN Vessels Near Its Territory Amid Rising Tensions

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence detected 8 PLAN vessels, 4 official ships, and 1 PLA aircraft near its territory on Sunday. The previous day, 16 Chinese military aircraft crossed the median line into Taiwan's ADIZ. US President Donald Trump stated the US will address the 'Taiwan problem' during a press gaggle. China's claim over Taiwan dates back to the Qing Dynasty's annexation in 1683, while Taiwan maintains a distinct government and military.

Taipei, May 31

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence on Sunday recorded 1 sortie of PLA aircraft, 8 PLAN vessels and 4 official ships around its territory.

Sharing the details in a post on X, the MND said that it had monitored the situation and responded.

"1 sorties of PLA aircraft, 8 PLAN vessels and 4 official ships operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. #ROCArmedForces have monitored the situation and responded."

MND detected the presence of 16 sorties of Chinese military aircraft, eight naval vessels and three official ships operating around its territorial waters on Saturday.

All the 16 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern, southwestern and eastern part Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

In a post on X, the MND said, "16 sorties of PLA aircraft, 8 PLAN vessels and 3 official ships operating around Taiwan detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 16 out of 16 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's northern, southwestern and eastern part ADIZ. ROC Armed Forces have monitored the situation and responded."

Earlier on May 21, US President Donald Trump, in his gaggle with the press at Joint Base Andrews en route to Groton, CT, said that the US will work on the 'Taiwan problem'.

"On Taiwan, I'll speak to everyone. We have that situation very well in hand. We had a great meeting with President Xi; it was amazing actually. We'll work on that Taiwan problem," he said.

China's claim over Taiwan is a complex issue rooted in historical, political, and legal arguments. Beijing asserts that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, a viewpoint embedded in national policy and upheld by domestic laws and international statements.

Taiwan, however, maintains a distinct identity, functioning independently with its government, military, and economy. Taiwan's status remains a significant point of international debate, testing the principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and non-interference in international law, as per the United Service Institution of India.

China's claim to Taiwan originates from the Qing Dynasty's annexation of the island in 1683 after defeating Ming loyalist Koxinga.

As an Indian, I understand the sensitivity around territorial integrity. But here's the thing - China is clearly violating Taiwan's airspace and territorial waters. This bullying behavior is concerning. India should learn from this and strengthen our own defenses. No country should tolerate such aggression. 😤

Trump's comments about the "Taiwan problem" are interesting. He's unpredictable, but the US has its own interests. India needs to be careful - we have good relations with both China and Taiwan (unofficially). Let's not get dragged into their disputes. Focus on our own border issues with China first. 🤔

From a legal perspective, the article from USI is spot on. The One-China policy is recognized by most nations, including India. But Taiwan's de facto independence complicates things. I think peaceful dialogue is the only way forward. Military posturing helps no one. 🙏

Taiwan's MND is being transparent about this. If China has nothing to hide, why conduct these operations secretly? The 16 sorties crossing the median line is not normal - it's intimidation. India faces similar issues with China on our northern borders. We should support Taiwan's right to defend itself. 💪🇹🇼

I'm not sure why everyone is getting so heated. This is standard military posturing from China. Every country does this near territories they claim. Yes, Taiwan feels threatened, but let's not forget that Beijing sees this as internal affairs. India should maintain a neutral stance and focus on our own challenges. 🌏
