Suchitra Krishnamoorthi recalls being scolded by Kundan Shah on 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' set
Mumbai, June 6
Actress and singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi is still fondly remembered by movie buffs as the beloved 'Anna' from the 1994 release, "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa" even after more than 3 decades of release.
Recently, Suchitra shared a fun anecdote from the romantic entertainer during an exclusive conversation with IANS.
She revealed that director Kundan Shah once scolded her on the set, saying that she better work hard as she had been cast only because she looked like the part.
She was asked, "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa has completed thirty-two years. What do you think is the magic behind the film's enduring popularity?"
Applauding filmmaker Kundan Shah for bringing out the innocence in every character, Suchitra told IANS, "I do not know if I can call it magic, but it was certainly Kundan Shah's magic. It was his storytelling and the innocence he captured in every character, whether it was Shah Rukh's character, Deepak's character or Ashutosh's character. The story felt very natural and relatable. Every film has its own destiny, and I am simply grateful that I was a part of it."
Sharing an incident from the shooting days of "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa", she went on to add, "I still remember Kundan Shah telling me, "Suchitra, can you work a little harder? You are here because you look the part, because you resemble Anna, but it would be better if you also worked harder." Those memories remain very special."
Backed by Vikram Mehrotra, the drama saw Shah Rukh Khan, Deepak Tijori, and Naseeruddin Shah as the lead, along with Rita Bhaduri, Satish Shah, Anjan Srivastav, Goga Kapoor, Ravi Baswani, Tiku Talsania, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Kurush Deboo, and Aditya Lakhia in supporting roles.
For the unaware, Shah Rukh has even bought the rights to the film under his banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.

Honestly, Kundan Shah was right to scold her - actors need that tough love sometimes. But Suchitra proved herself, no doubt. The film's innocence is why it still works today, unlike the over-the-top Bollywood masala we get now. Shah Rukh's performance as the confused lover was top-notch.
'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa' is a timeless classic. The casting was perfect - Shah Rukh as the lovable loser, Deepak as the cool friend, and Suchitra as the girl next door. Directors like Kundan Shah are rare; they didn't just make movies, they created art. Such a gem of a film. 🎬
I love how Suchitra owns this memory with such grace. Kundan Shah's direction was really special - he made every character feel real. The film's music is also underrated, especially 'Ae Kaash Ke Hum'. It's refreshing to hear actors share honest behind-the-scenes stories like this, rather than just PR talk.
This film is a masterclass in storytelling. Every character had depth - from Shah Rukh's Charlie to Ashutosh Gowariker's role. Kundan Shah's scolding was probably meant to motivate Suchitra, and it clearly worked. She was brilliant as Anna. A film that makes you laugh and cry - pure gold. 🌟
Such a lovely memory! But I feel slightly bad for Suchitra - being told you were cast only for your looks must sting a bit. Still, she took it positively and
