Success in govt service measured by impact on citizens' lives: Odisha CM

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday said success in government service is not measured by the position one holds. Still, by the difference one can make in the lives of citizens.
He was speaking during the distribution of appointment letters to newly recruited personnel at the 16th Rozgar Mela held in Bhubaneswar.
The Chief Minister distributed appointment letters to 1,326 candidates at a state‑level job fair in Bhubaneswar, with recruits joining nine state government departments.
The departments include Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water, Energy, Agriculture & Farmers' Empowerment, Health & Family Welfare, Fisheries & Animal Resources, Sports & Youth Services, Skill Development & Technical Education and Excise.
Congratulating the recruits, Majhi said the primary objective of a government job is public service. He told them it was their moral duty to ensure time‑bound resolution of people's problems and grievances.
"Whenever a person approaches you with a problem, listening with respect and taking prompt action is true public service. We aim to ensure that all government benefits and services reach the last mile of society. Perform your duty keeping this in mind," he said.
He further said a massive recruitment drive has been launched in Odisha in both government and private sectors, keeping in view the need for clean and strong governance and efficient, disciplined and service‑oriented officers and employees. The aim is to achieve the target of a 'Samruddha Odisha' by 2036 and contribute to the growth engine of a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047.
The Chief Minister revealed that since June 2024, as many as 45,408 people have been provided government employment so far.
Majhi said recognising the importance of industrialisation in harnessing the true potential of youth, the government has been making sustained efforts to promote industrial growth in the State over the past two years.
He noted that as a result of these efforts, investment proposals worth around Rs 21 lakh crore have come to the State over the past two years, expected to create 20 lakh employment opportunities.
Referring to the recent Odisha Food Processing Roadshow in New Delhi and Noida held two days ago, Majhi said he held one‑to‑one discussions with 208 investors across 46 meetings, and 38 MoUs were signed. These agreements entail a total investment of Rs 66,392 crore and are expected to create 54,135 new employment opportunities.
Stating that reverse migration has now begun in Odisha, the Chief Minister said the State would witness significant changes in industrialisation and employment in the coming days.

The Rs 21 lakh crore investment proposals sound promising, but we've heard such numbers before. I hope the implementation matches the rhetoric. The food processing MoUs with 54,000 jobs are a good start though.

The message about "listening with respect" is so important. Many government employees forget that they're there to serve the public, not to be bosses. This should be the training motto for all new recruits.
1,326 appointments in one day is good, but we need to address the quality of education and skill development to sustain these jobs. Industrialization without skilled manpower won't work. Just saying.
The focus on "last mile delivery" of government services is the right approach. If every officer takes this seriously, Odisha will truly develop. Great initiative with the Rozgar Mela! 🎉
