"Stop holding the world hostage": German Chancellor Merz condemns Iran's strikes on UAE

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemns Iranian missile strikes on UAE, calls for return to negotiations and end to regional hostilities.

"Tehran must return to the negotiating table and stop holding the region and the world hostage. - Friedrich Merz"

Berlin, May 5

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the Iranian leadership to resume diplomatic negotiations following Monday's missile and drone strikes directed at the United Arab Emirates.

The strikes represent the first instance of Iranian military action against the Gulf state since a ceasefire was established nearly four weeks ago. According to the UAE Defence Ministry, its air defence systems successfully intercepted a total of 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones.

Reacting to the escalation, Chancellor Merz emphasised the need for regional stability and an end to maritime disruptions. "Tehran must return to the negotiating table and stop holding the region and the world hostage. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz must end," Merz stated on X.

He further expressed support for regional allies, adding, "We strongly condemn these attacks. Our solidarity is with the people of the United Arab Emirates and our partners in the region."

The German leader also reaffirmed his long-standing position on Iran's nuclear ambitions and the safety of partner nations, asserting that "Tehran must not acquire a nuclear weapon" and that "There must be no further threats or attacks against our partners."

The condemnation from Berlin was echoed in London, where British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for immediate de-escalation in the region. "The UK condemns the drone and missile strikes targeting the United Arab Emirates," Starmer said.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of diplomatic engagement to maintain the current truce, stating, "The escalation must cease. Iran needs to engage meaningfully in negotiations to ensure the ceasefire in the Middle East endures, and a long-term diplomatic solution is achieved."

In Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron described the targeting of civilian sites as "unjustified and unacceptable," further highlighting the international concern over the deteriorating security situation.

The surge in hostilities comes as discussions between the United States and Iran have failed to yield significant progress. The lack of diplomatic breakthroughs has left the ceasefire, which was agreed upon on 8 April, appearing increasingly fragile.

Why does the West always play judge when it comes to Middle East conflicts? They have been bombing countries for decades. But yes, Iran shouldn't be attacking UAE either. Both sides need to stop pretending and sit down for real talks. The common people are the ones suffering from this endless cycle. 🇮🇳✌️

Merz is right to call out Iran. The UAE has been a peaceful hub for trade and tourism - see Dubai! - and these missile attacks threaten that. India's relationship with Gulf states is crucial for our energy security and our diaspora working there. Hope diplomacy wins, but Iran needs to understand that international community won't tolerate such aggression. Full support to ceasefire efforts.

As someone who lived in Dubai for 5 years, this is terrifying. The UAE has always been a safe haven in the Middle East. Iran's actions are totally disproportionate and reckless. Blocking the Strait of Hormuz would be catastrophic - not just for the region but for India's economy too. We import so much oil from there. Germany and UK should push for stronger sanctions on Iran if they don't comply.

Merz says 'stop holding the world hostage' but who gave the West the right to lecture everyone? The US drone strikes in Iraq and Syria are not condemned with this same passion. While I don't support Iran attacking UAE, we need to see the bigger picture - decades of Western intervention have created this mess. India should stay neutral and push for dialogue, not take sides.
