Steven Spielberg says Interstellar was "much better" under Christopher Nolan

Steven Spielberg reveals he dropped out of directing Interstellar, praising Christopher Nolan for making it a "much better movie" and a lasting hit.

"Interstellar was a much better movie in Chris Nolan's hands than it would have been in mine. - Steven Spielberg"

Washington DC, April 11

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has said that 'Interstellar' turned out to be a "much better movie" after Christopher Nolan took over the project, according to People.

In a recent interview, Spielberg revealed that he had been attached to the film for nearly a year during its early development stages. "I was involved with 'Interstellar' for a year," he said. "Kip Thorne brought me the project with Lynda Obst, the producer, and I became fascinated with it. I spent a lot of time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, talking to the scientists there and the aerospace engineers."

Spielberg also shared that Jonathan Nolan worked on early drafts of the script but the project did not fully come together under his direction. "It didn't stick," he said, according to People.

Recalling a conversation with Jonathan Nolan, Spielberg said, "Jonah actually said, 'If there comes a point where you decide not to make this movie, I can tell you who's gonna grab it. He's already bugging me about it. And that's my brother Chris,'" according to People.

"He was absolutely right. The second I decided not to make it, Chris jumped on board, probably the next day," Spielberg added.

Praising Nolan's vision, Spielberg said, "Interstellar was a much better movie in Chris Nolan's hands than it would have been in mine," according to People.

The film, released in 2014, starred Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain, and went on to become a major box office success.

Actor Timothee Chalamet, who appeared in the film, recently recalled reconnecting with Nolan at a screening. "The whole experience with Nolan, I felt totally like 17 again," he said. "I went home, it was shocking ...That was a crazy car ride home for me. I was like, 'Holy..., I feel like, you know, the 13 years that elapsed haven't elapsed,'" according to People.

"We were taking pictures together ... and he throws me in a headlock and starts giving me a noogie," Chalamet added. "I'm like, 'Holy.., Chris Nolan's hitting me with a noogie right now.' "

"I said to him, 'Chris, I'm a 30-year-old man,' " he continued. "He said, 'Not to me, you're not.' "

Meanwhile, Nolan reflected on the film's evolving reception over time. "The project seems to touch people more and more year after year and sort of grows," he said. "For years, people would recognize me somewhere and talk about Dark Knight. But over the last 10 years it's become 'Interstellar'," according to People.

Spielberg is now set to return with his upcoming film Disclosure Day, while Nolan is preparing for the release of The Odyssey, according to People.

As an Indian sci-fi fan, I'm so glad this film ended up with Nolan. The themes of love transcending time and space, and the father-daughter relationship, resonated deeply. Spielberg might have made it more emotional, but Nolan's cold, vast universe made the emotional beats hit harder. A masterpiece.

Respectfully, I have to disagree with Spielberg's assessment here. While Nolan's film is visually stunning, Spielberg's version, with his focus on character and human connection from his early research, could have been even more profound. The final film sometimes feels a bit cold and confusing.

The story about Timothee Chalamet and the noogie is hilarious! 😂 It shows Nolan doesn't take himself too seriously. Also, it's true what Nolan says—in India, Interstellar has a massive cult following now. People quote "Do not go gentle into that good night" all the time. It aged like fine wine.

Both are geniuses. But for this particular story about theoretical physics and time dilation, Nolan was the right choice. His collaboration with Kip Thorne was key. Spielberg's version would have been great too, but different. Just happy we got the film we did. The score by Zimmer is god-level!

Interesting behind-the-scenes! It's like destiny. Jonathan Nolan basically played matchmaker for his brother. The film's message about hope and perseverance in the face of a dying Earth feels very relevant today, especially with our climate challenges. More films like this, please.
