'Spirit of Israel stronger than enemies': Netanyahu greets nation on Passover

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu delivers a Passover address on national resilience as Iran fires ballistic missiles at central Israel, triggering sirens.

"the spirit of the people of Israel is stronger than they are - Benjamin Netanyahu"

Tel Aviv, April 2

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sent a holiday greeting to the nation on Wednesday, emphasising the resilience of the Israeli people amid ongoing West Asia conflicts.

In a post on X in Hebrew, Netanyahu highlighted the significance of Passover and paid tribute to Israel's "heroic fighters."

The post said: "My brothers and sisters, citizens of Israel, As the State of Israel wages a historic campaign for our existence and our future, the Passover holiday reminds us all of a profound truth that has accompanied our people for generations: even in the face of ruthless enemies who rise up to destroy us, the spirit of the people of Israel is stronger than they are, and our faith is stronger than they are."

He added, "It is precisely in these days, as we remember the painful costs, embrace the families of the fallen and the wounded, and continue to act with determination against our enemies, that I wish to send a special holiday blessing to our heroic fighters in the regular forces and reserves, who carry on their shoulders the security of the entire nation."

The Prime Minister drew strength from the story of the Exodus, saying, "We remember that national liberty endures thanks to our heroes who defend the homeland with selfless devotion. We draw strength from the story of the Exodus from Egypt, from the story of our people's freedom, revival, and victory, and we believe that this time too we will stand together, fight together, and, with God's help, prevail together"

Passover is one of the most significant Jewish festivals. Meanwhile, the Times of Israel reported on Wednesday that sirens sounded repeatedly in central Israel in the evening, shortly before the start of Passover, as Iran fired a major ballistic missile barrage and Hezbollah launched rockets from Lebanon.

Citing initial IDF assessments, it reported that some 10 ballistic missiles were fired at central Israel, in the largest Iranian salvo on Israel since the early days of the war.

It added that one Iranian missile, apparently carrying a cluster munition warhead, dispersed bomblets over central Israel. Rescue teams reported damage to homes and vehicles in the cities of Rosh HaAyin and Petah Tikva. Another munition struck a playground in Petah Tikva, causing damage, footage showed.

As per Times of Israel, there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Reading about missiles hitting playgrounds is heartbreaking 💔. No child should live in such fear. As an Indian, our history teaches us the cost of partition and conflict. My thoughts are with all civilians caught in this, regardless of which side of the border they are on.

The timing of the missile barrage on a major religious holiday is particularly harsh. Festivals are about hope and family. This escalation is worrying for global stability. India has strategic ties with multiple players in the region; I hope our diplomacy can help de-escalate.

Drawing parallels to a story of exodus and freedom is powerful rhetoric. However, as an outside observer, I feel the message would carry more moral weight if there was equal emphasis on the pursuit of a lasting political solution that guarantees security and dignity for everyone in the region.

The situation is a stark reminder of why strong national defence is non-negotiable. India understands this well given our own challenges. Wishing strength to the people of Israel this Passover. Hoping for peace, but peace from a position of strength is the only lasting peace.

The article mentions "largest Iranian salvo". This direct state-on-state confrontation is a dangerous new phase. Global oil prices will feel the impact, and that affects all of us in India. Our economy can't afford another prolonged conflict in West Asia. Urgent diplomacy is needed.
