New Delhi, April 27

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has nominated 14 MLAs to represent the legislature in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, an official said on Monday.

The legislators have been nominated members of the civic agency as per the provision of Section 3(3) (b) (iii) of Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 for Financial year 2026-2027, said an official statement.

The nominated MLAs are -- Satish Upadhyay (Malviya Nagar), Umang Bajaj (Rajinder Nagar), Kartar Singh Tanwar (Chhatarpur), Ravinder Singh Negi (Patparganj), Raj Karan Khatri (Narela), Tilak Ram Gupta (Tri Nagar), Poonam Sharma (Wazirpur), Som Dutt (Sadar Bazar), Vishesh Ravi (Karol Bagh), Kailash Gangwal (Madipur), Shyam Sharma (Hari Nagar), Kailash Gehlot (Bijwasan), Kuldeep Solanki (Palam) and Virender Singh Kadyan.

The nomination of legislators to the civic body comes ahead of the One-Day Special Session of the Assembly called by Speaker Gupta on Tuesday.

It is expected that the House may discuss women's reservation and may pass a resolution condemning the Congress and other INDIA bloc parties for defeating the amendment bill on the issue in Lok Sabha earlier this month.

Speaker Vijender Gupta issued the notification to summon the Fifth Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly on Sunday, after getting the approval of Lt. Governor T.S. Sandhu.

In a related development, Gupta informed that the L-G has prorogued the Fourth Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly with immediate effect on Sunday.

This formal order brings an official end to the prolonged Sessions that had been ongoing, allowing for a structured transition into the new session.

To facilitate the upcoming business, the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat has finalised all necessary arrangements to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted conduct of the proceedings, said a statement issued by the Assembly secretariat.

In light of recent bomb threats, the Secretariat has significantly bolstered security protocols across the premises.

In view of the recent bomb threats, tight security measures and a comprehensive safety net have been established at the Old Secretariat to safeguard the members and staff during the session, it said.

Interesting timing - nominating MLAs just before a special session focusing on women's reservation. But I hope these 14 MLAs actually work for the people of Delhi rather than just doing tokenism. The real test will be how they handle the garbage crisis and water shortage in our colonies.

Why only 14? MCD has serious issues - poor roads, overflowing drains, corrupt contractors. And the same old faces getting nominated? Where is the fresh blood? We need real change, not just political appointments. 😡

Appreciate the security measures given the bomb threats. But what about transparency? The list of MLAs seems heavily tilted towards one party. Delhi needs opposition voices in MCD too. Otherwise, it's just a rubber stamp. Let's see if women's reservation actually gets passed or just debated. 🤔

The women's reservation bill condemnation is just political drama. Instead of blaming each other, all parties should work together to pass it. Common Delhiwala just wants clean water, proper sanitation, and safe roads. These MLAs should remember that. 🏙️

Good to see Kailash Gangwal and Kartar Singh Tanwar nominated - they have grassroots experience in rural-urban interface areas like Bijwasan and Chhatarpur. But the real question is: will they have actual power or just be decorative members? MCD needs strong leadership, not just more politicians. 💪
