Southern Railway loads 13.7 lakh tonnes of fertiliser in April-June 2026-27, registering 7 per cent Growth

Southern Railway has accorded the highest priority to the movement of fertilisers in view of the requirement of farmers during the Kharif sowing season. During the first quarter of the current financial year, from April to June 2026-27, Southern Railway loaded 13.7 lakh tonnes of fertilisers.
According to the press release by the Southern Railway, this represents a growth of 7 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous financial year 2025-26, and reflects the sustained capacity of the Railways to move fertilizers to the hinterland in step with the progress of the sowing season.
There has been no issue whatsoever regarding the availability of railway rakes for fertiliser traffic in its jurisdiction. Rakes have been, and continue to be, supplied to all ports served by Southern Railway -- including New Mangalore Port, Chennai Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port, Tuticorin -- on time and as and when a demand is raised by the port authorities and by the fertiliser companies, the release stated.
Every indent placed by consignors has been met promptly, and no indent for fertiliser movement is pending on account of non-availability of rakes.
These measures have been made possible through continuous coordination between Southern Railway, port authorities and fertiliser companies to anticipate and plan rake requirements in advance of vessel arrivals, the release said.
Round-the-clock monitoring of fertiliser indents at the divisional and headquarters levels, with priority placement of rakes for fertilizers during the Kharif season.
Sustained attention to loading and unloading operations at port sidings and goods terminals to ensure quick turnaround of wagons.
Southern Railway continues to make available every rake required for the purpose of transportation of fertilisers.
Port authorities, fertiliser companies and other stakeholders are assured that adequate railway rakes stand ready to meet their requirements throughout the Kharif season and beyond, the release stated.

7% growth is decent but with India's agriculture needs, we need much higher capacity. Also, what about the distribution from railway terminals to actual farmlands? That last-mile connectivity is where the real challenge lies. Let's see holistic picture.
