South Korean President Lee says state's primary duty is to protect people's lives, safety

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday reiterated that the state's primary duty is to ensure the safety of the people and protect their lives.
Lee made the remarks in a ceremony marking the opening of the country's first hospital dedicated to treating first responders.
"The primary duty of the state is to protect its people's lives and safety," Lee said in a speech, Yonhap News Agency reported.
Firefighters are at the forefront of carrying out this duty at accident sites and in disasters, the president noted, highlighting that thanks to their efforts, the public can go about their daily lives safely and peacefully.
The National Fire Hospital in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, is the country's first general hospital dedicated to treating firefighters and other first responders, and conducting research tailored to their occupational health needs.
The hospital began operations in June to provide health care services to firefighters, police officers and their family members, as well as local residents.
"I hope this National Fire Hospital can serve as a trustworthy place of care that deeply understands and treats you," the president said, addressing first responders.
The hospital will also serve as a regional public health care hub in North Chungcheong Province, Lee said, pledging relevant government support and investment.
"I am confident that a country where heroes who save people's lives in the most dangerous places are protected and cared for ... is a truly exemplary country."
President Lee Jae Myung also shared the details about the National Fire Hospital on social media platform X.
In a post on X, Lee Jae Myung stated, "When you protect the people, the Republic of Korea will protect you. Heroes who rush into the flames first and leave the scene last. Now it's the nation's turn to respond to the dedication of our firefighters. The Republic of Korea's first specialised firefighting hospital, the 'National Fire Hospital,' has finally opened its doors."
"Behind the sacrifices of these shining heroes lay deep shadows. The very moment they leaped in to save others' lives left profound wounds on their own bodies and minds. Now, the government will tend to those wounds. Protecting our heroes is the path to safeguarding the nation and its people. We will build a country where those who rescue citizens from the most dangerous places are safely protected and treated," he added.

This is what a responsible government looks like. Respect for President Lee. Meanwhile, in India, we're still debating on basic infrastructure. Hope our leaders learn something from this.
A truly thoughtful gesture. Firefighters are unsung heroes everywhere. In India too, we must honour their service with concrete actions, not just words and certificates on National Fire Service Day.
"Protecting those who protect us" - seems like a simple idea but so few countries actually implement it. While we are at it, maybe also include mental health support for first responders. They see a lot of trauma.
I wish Indian politicians showed this much empathy and action. Our first responders, especially in metro cities, work under extreme pressure with limited resources. Khushboo to South Korea for setting an example! 👏
