"Situation quite serious": Assam CM reviews flood situation in Golaghat, visits relief camps

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday visited several flood-affected areas of Golaghat district to assess the extent of damage and review ongoing rescue and relief operations, the CMO stated.
He also visited several relief camps in the district, interacted with flood-affected people taking shelter there and reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken.
The Chief Minister visited the relief camp set up at Bhaskar Senior Basic School in Kamarbandha, where 178 flood-affected people are currently taking shelter.
He interacted with the inmates to understand their problems, daily requirements and the challenges they are facing.
Following the visit, the Chief Minister said that the district administration and the concerned departments had been directed to ensure that all the essential needs of the affected people are met on priority.
According to the CMO, the recent floods have affected 25,791 people in Golaghat district.
The Chief Minister later visited the relief camp established at Numaligarh Higher Secondary School, where 182 flood-affected people, including a large number of children, have taken shelter.
He spent some time interacting with the children and enquired about their well-being.
Speaking to the media after visiting the camps, the Chief Minister said that the recent floods have caused widespread hardship, damaging agricultural fields and affecting livestock, while impacting a large number of families.
He stated that the government is making every effort to provide adequate assistance to all those affected.
Sarma further informed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had spoken to him over the telephone today to review the prevailing flood situation in Assam.
He said the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had informed him that an inter-ministerial central team would soon visit Assam to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the flood damage and examine the assistance required from the Central Government for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction, the CMO stated.
"The flood situation in Assam is quite serious. So far, 40 people have died, but according to our assessment, there are still 70 to 80 people missing. I estimate that the casualty figure will rise further. This entire situation arose because of a cloudburst in Nagaland. Water came from the floodwaters and severely affected our four districts...Union Home Minister Amit Shah also called me just now and told me that an inter-ministerial team will be sent to Assam today or tomorrow. I believe that both governments together will be able to stand with the people in this time of grief," CM Sarma said.
Several districts, including Jorhat and Sivasagar, in Assam have been affected by the floods.

A cloudburst in Nagaland causing all this? Climate change is real, bhai. But seeing the children in those camps breaks my heart. Why isn't there a better early warning system for these floods?? The government should have prepared for this after last year's devastation.
Good to see the CM interacting directly with the affected people. But 70-80 people missing and only 40 dead? That's worrying. The Assam-Meghalaya-Nagaland region always bears the brunt. Hope the central team doesn't take months to arrive like last time. 🙏
Honest question: why do floods always hit the same districts? Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat - every year the same story. Maybe it's time for permanent flood control structures, not just relief camps. And cloudburst from Nagaland - shouldn't there be regional coordination for disaster management? 🤔
25,000+ affected is no small number. CM Sarma and Amit Shah coordinating on this is positive, but we need long-term solutions. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries cause havoc every monsoon. Kudos to the relief workers though - running camps for 178 and 182 people while dealing with all this is incredible work.
My family is from Jorhat, and they tell me it's bad this year. The CM visiting schools being used as relief camps is a good sign, but I hope the education of those children doesn't get disrupted further. Also, 70-80 missing people is terrifying - hope they're found safe. 🙏
