SIR will have generational impact on Nagaland, country: ECI Secretary
Kohima, Aug 21
Election Commission of India Secretary Binod Kumar on Thursday urged election officials in Nagaland to give their best and treat the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll with utmost seriousness, saying the exercise would have a generational impact on both the state and the country.
The ECI Secretary reviewed progress on the Special Intensive Revision of the Photo Electoral Roll 2026 in Kohima district and discussed the challenges officials face, particularly at polling stations where mapping and enumeration figures remain low.
An election official said Kumar directed officials to ensure the distribution and collection of Enumeration Forms are completed well in advance so the revision exercise can be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
The review meeting was attended by Additional Chief Electoral Officer Awa Lorin, Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer (DEO) of Kohima B. Henok Buchem, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) of the concerned polling stations.
During the meeting, Kumar advised the EROs and AEROs to conduct field visits and interact directly with BLOs in areas where SIR progress is comparatively low so that bottlenecks can be identified and resolved promptly.
The official said the Election Commission had earlier directed the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision in 16 states and three Union Territories, including Nagaland. He added that the schedule for Phase‑III of the SIR had been finalised keeping in view the availability of the common field machinery engaged in the ongoing house‑listing exercise for Census‑2027.
The official said the SIR is a participative exercise involving all stakeholders, including electors, political parties and election officials, to prepare a transparent, accurate and inclusive electoral roll. He said all recognised political parties had been asked to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for every polling booth to ensure active participation and enhance transparency throughout the revision process.
The qualifying date for the Special Intensive Revision in Nagaland has been fixed as October 1, 2026. According to the official, the state's draft electoral roll will be published on September 20, 2026. Following the filing and disposal of claims and objections between September 20 and November 18, 2026, the final Photo Electoral Roll would be published on November 22, 2026.
