Simhastha Kumbh 2027: Technical Advisory Committee reviews crowd management, surveillance plans in Nashik

As part of the preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027, the Technical Advisory Committee on Friday reviewed the proposed technology interventions for the mega religious gathering during a meeting held at the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority headquarters.
As per the release, the committee later visited key locations in Nashik such as Ramkund, Panchvati, Kapila Sangam and will visit Trimbakeshwar on Saturday to assess the proposed deployment of technological systems and understand site-specific operational requirements.
The meeting was attended by Deepankar Chowdhury, IIT Bombay and Chairperson of the Technical Advisory Committee as well as Member, State Disaster Management Authority; Santosh Warik, Director, Maharashtra Fire Services; and Ratansingh Pardeshi, Under Secretary, Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Government of Maharashtra; along with NTKMA Additional Commissioner Kamlakar Randive and senior officers of NTKMA and officials from the civic and district administration.
During the meeting, NTKMA officials presented the overall planning framework for Simhastha 2027, including crowd management strategies, disaster risk reduction measures, surveillance systems, communication infrastructure, command and control arrangements, and the proposed deployment of early warning mechanisms. The committee reviewed the technical proposals and held detailed discussions on the specifications, deployment strategy and integration of various technology solutions.
Following the review, the committee visited major congregation areas, ghats, important routes and other critical locations in Nashik. The field assessment enabled the members to evaluate the suitability of the proposed locations for surveillance, communication and early warning systems while interacting with officials involved in the planning and implementation of Simhastha 2027.
The observations and recommendations of the committee will help finalise the technical specifications and deployment plan for the proposed systems.

Finally, they're thinking about surveillance and early warning systems. The Kumbh attracts crores of devotees, and safety should be the top priority. Hope they also focus on crowd flow analysis near the ghats during peak bathing days. Well-planned technology can save many lives.
Good initiative but I hope they remember the basics too - proper signage, drinking water, sanitation facilities. Technology is important but don't forget the ground-level arrangements for the common devotee. The real test will be during the Shahi Snan days when lakhs gather at once.
As someone who attended the 2015 Kumbh in Nashik, I can say the experience was chaotic. The roads near Panchvati were jammed for hours. Really hope the committee's recommendations include better traffic management plans and emergency escape routes. Better late than never! 👍
It's reassuring to know that experts from IIT Bombay are involved in planning. The use of AI-based crowd density monitoring and drone surveillance could be game-changers. However, I hope the authorities also invest in training local volunteers and police personnel to handle emergency situations effectively.
Technology is all good, but what about the spiritual experience? The Kumbh is a once-in-a-lifetime event for many devotees. Don't make it feel like a security camp. But yes, safety first - just ensure the implementation is smooth and doesn't create unnecessary obstacles for pilgrims. 🙏
