Shyam Jagannathan's tenure extended as DG Shipping; Sanjay Jaju repatriated to T'gana

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved a two-year extension in the central deputation tenure of senior IAS officer Shyam Jagannathan, while also clearing the repatriation of Telangana-cadre IAS officer Sanjay Jaju to his parent state, according to official orders issued by the Centre.
Shyam Jagannathan, a 1997-batch IAS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, will continue to serve as Director General (Shipping) in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for an additional two years.
According to the official order, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in central deputation tenure of Shri Shyam Jagannathan, IAS (AM:97), Director General (Shipping), Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary to the Government of India for a period of two years beyond 01.06.2026 i.e. up to 01.06.2028 or until further orders, whichever is earlier."
With the approval, Jagannathan will continue to head the Directorate General of Shipping, the country's apex maritime regulatory authority functioning under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Established in 1949 and headquartered in Mumbai, the Directorate General of Shipping is responsible for implementing India's maritime policies and regulations.
The organisation plays a key role in ensuring maritime safety, regulating merchant shipping activities, promoting the welfare and training of seafarers, enforcing international maritime standards, and preventing marine pollution in Indian waters.
As Director General (Shipping), Jagannathan has been overseeing critical aspects of the country's maritime administration, including shipping regulation, maritime safety compliance, seafarer certification, and policy implementation aimed at strengthening India's shipping and maritime ecosystem.
In a separate decision, the ACC has approved the repatriation of Sanjay Jaju, a 1992-batch IAS officer of the Telangana cadre, to his parent cadre following a request from the Telangana government.
Jaju is currently serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and has been relieved from his central deputation assignment to enable his return to the state administration.
The order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) stated, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved repatriation of Sanjay Jaju to his parent cadre on the request of Government of Telangana."
Jaju is expected to assume his new responsibilities in Telangana on June 30, the day Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao is scheduled to demit office upon completion of his extended tenure.
Jaju's return marks the end of one of the longest central deputation tenures among officers belonging to the Telangana cadre.
Over the course of nearly 13 years in the Central government, he held several important assignments across key ministries and departments.
Among his notable assignments was his tenure as Secretary in the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, where he was involved in overseeing media, broadcasting, and communication-related policy matters.
Prior to his repatriation, he was serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

Interesting to see Sanjay Jaju repatriated after 13 years in Delhi. That's a long time away from your cadre. Hope Telangana benefits from his experience in media and northeast development. But transfers like these also show how IAS officers can lose touch with ground realities in their home state.
DG Shipping is such an important but underappreciated role. India's maritime sector needs strong leadership to implement coastal shipping, port modernization, and seafarer training. Just hope the extension doesn't create a bureaucratic logjam - need fresh ideas too.
I work in the shipping industry in Mumbai. Jagannathan has been fairly proactive on digitalization of maritime trade documentation. But we need faster action on reducing port turnaround times. Hope this extension means more concrete outcomes for Indian shipping companies.
