Indian T20I opener Abhishek Sharma has called leading Amritsar Soormas in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League an emotional responsibility, given his roots in the city. He wants his team to play fearless, attacking cricket and sees the league as a crucial platform for Punjab's emerging talents. The tournament, running from August 30 to September 13, will feature stars like Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh.

Sher-e-Punjab T20: Leading Amritsar Soormas an "emotional responsibility" for Abhishek Sharma

Amritsar, August 22

Leading his hometown team will make the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League a particularly special assignment for Indian T20I opener Abhishek Sharma, who is relishing the opportunity to captain Amritsar Soormas and help shape the next generation of Punjab cricketers.

For Abhishek, whose cricketing journey began in Amritsar, wearing the Soormas crest carries a strong emotional significance.

"It is an honour to lead this team and a deeply emotional responsibility as well. Punjab has given me everything in my cricketing journey, and stepping out not just as a player but as captain to lead a franchise in my home state's T20 league is a proud milestone," he said as per a press release.

The all-rounder wants his side to play an attacking brand of cricket, with clarity of roles and no fear of failure. "My personal approach to the game is all about taking the attack to the opposition right from ball one, and I want that same mindset to reflect across the entire XI. Whether batting, bowling, or fielding, we should never play with the fear of failure," Abhishek said.

He also sees the league as a major opportunity for Punjab's emerging cricketers, providing them with exposure to competitive, televised cricket and professional franchise environments. "It is a game-changer for Punjab cricket. There is immense raw talent across districts that does not always get immediate limelight in national domestic tournaments. A televised, competitive league bridges that gap," he said.

Having played at the highest level, Abhishek is keen to pass on the importance of self-belief, match awareness and decision-making under pressure to the younger members of the squad. And while lifting the trophy remains an ambition, Abhishek believes the biggest reward would be seeing his young teammates use the platform to earn state and IPL opportunities.

"Lifting the trophy would be special, but true success means seeing three or four young lads from our squad gain the confidence and exposure to earn IPL contracts and state call-ups. If I can inspire the next generation from Amritsar whilst playing winning cricket, that is the ultimate reward," he said.

The tournament will be played from August 30 to September 13 and is set to feature some of the biggest names from the state, including India captain Shubman Gill, Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, Gurnoor Brar, Prabhsimran Singh and Ramandeep Singh, according to a press release from PCA.
