Seva Teerth is for serving nation; numerous welfare schemes will be launched: SP Singh Baghel

PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Seva Teerth, the new PMO complex. Union Minister SP Singh Baghel and Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh react.

"The name doesn't matter; what matters are the policies and programmes being implemented. - Ujjwal Raman Singh"

New Delhi, Feb 13

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Seva Teerth, Union Minister of State S.P. Singh Baghel on Friday said the initiative reflects the spirit of national service and will serve as a platform for launching welfare schemes.

Speaking to IANS, Baghel said, "The term Seva Teerth itself reflects its purpose. The Prime Minister's office is dedicated to service, and it is called a Teerth because from here, numerous welfare schemes for the entire country will be launched, making this a place to serve the nation."

Reacting to the development, Congress MP Ujjwal Raman Singh said the focus should remain on governance and public welfare rather than names.

He said, "The name doesn't matter; what matters are the policies and programmes being implemented. If they are being made to protect American interests, you can give any name; it won't make a difference. What matters is whether it serves the public, benefits the country, and protects the nation's sovereignty, which is being compromised today."

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the new complex named 'Seva Teerth', which houses the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and the Cabinet Secretariat.

The occasion marks a significant milestone, a formal transition from the old PMO office at South Block to 'Seva Teerth', the new state-of-the-art complex on Kartavya Path, previously known as Rajpath.

The new PMO office, situated barely around one kilometre from the iconic South Block building on Raisina Hill, will serve as the new cornerstone of governance, bringing the entire administrative machinery in proximity.

The Prime Minister will also unveil the Kartavya Bhawan complex - 1 & 2 in the evening, from where several high-profile ministries, including Finance, Defence, Health & Family Welfare, Education and others will operate.

For decades, various ministries have operated from scattered, ageing buildings across the Central Vista, creating logistical hurdles and coordination gaps.

With the new complexes being inaugurated, this will resolve long-pending issues by integrating them into modern and digitally enabled infrastructure.

According to officials, the new complexes feature digitally integrated offices, structured public interface zones and centralised reception facilities. These features will enhance collaboration, efficiency, seamless governance, improved citizen engagement and enhanced employee well-being.

Designed in accordance with 4-Star GRIHA standards, the complexes incorporate renewable energy systems, water conservation measures, waste management solutions and high-performance building envelopes.

"These measures significantly reduce environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency. The building complexes also include comprehensive safety and security frameworks, such as smart access control systems, surveillance networks and advanced emergency response infrastructure, ensuring a secure and accessible environment for officials and visitors," said an official statement.

The inauguration marks a transformative milestone in India's administrative governance architecture and reflects the Prime Minister's commitment to building a modern, efficient, accessible and citizen-centric governance ecosystem, the statement mentioned.

The name 'Seva Teerth' is beautiful and meaningful. A teerth is a sacred place for pilgrimage, and if this becomes a place dedicated to serving the people, then it's a wonderful concept. Actions must match the name, though.

I have to agree with the Congress MP here. What's in a name? We've seen many grandly named schemes. The real 'seva' will be if a common person like me can get his work done without hassle from these new, integrated offices. Show us the results.

As someone who has worked with government contracts, the coordination gaps between ministries in old buildings were a real problem. Digitally integrated offices sound promising for efficiency. The environmental focus with GRIHA standards is also commendable.

The symbolism is strong – moving from 'Rajpath' (Path of Rule) to 'Kartavya Path' (Path of Duty) and now 'Seva Teerth'. It reflects a changing mindset. Hope the welfare schemes launched from here truly reach the last person in the queue.

Good step for administrative reform. But let's not forget the cost. Was this massive Central Vista redevelopment the most urgent need when so many hospitals and schools need funding? A balanced perspective is important.
