Security, traffic restrictions announced ahead of PM Modi's July 17 visit to Chandigarh; Police issues traffic advisory
Chandigarh, July 16
Chandigarh police issued a traffic advisory ahead of PM Narendra Modi's visit to Chandigarh on Friday, appealing to the general public to cooperate with the police. Commuters in the city have been advised to avoid certain road stretches on Friday afternoon, detailing temporary road restrictions and alternate routes ahead of the Prime Minister's visit.
Releasing the official guidelines on Wednesday for the VVIP movement, law enforcement officials urged residents to plan their commutes carefully and strictly follow the designated parking rules to ensure smooth transit.
Highlighting the specific areas that will face temporary disruption, the official notice stated, "Traffic will be diverted/restricted on 17.7.2026 from Chandigarh-Nayagaon barrier towards PEC Light Point upto Sector 2/3/10-11 Chowk during the movement of the VVIP. General public is requested to avoid the above stretch/road upto 3:00 PM."
Beyond the identified primary route, the authorities warned that additional restrictions may be imposed on various road stretches throughout the day as part of the security protocol.
"Traffic movement may be restricted/diverted on certain road stretches in view of the VVIP visit. In view of the above, the general public is requested to adopt alternate routes to avoid any congestion/inconvenience. Further, the general public is requested to follow the Social Media Account of Chandigarh Traffic Police for real-time updates on traffic," the traffic advisory read.
Regarding logistical arrangements, the advisory stated, "Guests, invitees and official staff are requested to park their vehicles at the designated parking lots only. General public is advised not to park/ply their vehicles on cycle track/pedestrian pathway and No Parking Area, otherwise strict action shall be taken as per law and vehicles shall be towed away."
The Chandigarh Traffic Police in the official advisory also appealed to the general public to "cooperate with the police and any inconvenience caused on account of these restrictions/diversions is deeply regretted."

I read that the PM is launching projects worth Rs 26,800 crore. That's massive! The hydrogen train between Jind and Sonipat sounds like a game-changer for green energy. The traffic restrictions are a small price for such big developments. Hope the police manage the situation smoothly.
Why do these VIP visits always cause so much chaos for common people? 😤 The warning is last-minute and people have to take leave or adjust schedules. I live near Sector 2 and I know tomorrow will be a nightmare. At least they're giving updates on social media, I'll check that.
Great to see development projects worth thousands of crores being announced. The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway will be a boon for travellers. But these traffic jams are unavoidable in Chandigarh—it's a planned city and roads get blocked easily. Let's hope the police manage diversions efficiently.
The hydrogen train is a great initiative for sustainable mobility! But I'm more concerned about the inconvenience caused to daily commuters. The advisory says avoid certain roads till 3 PM, but what about people who have to go to work or hospitals? I hope the police enforce these restrictions with common sense.
BJP ka pradhan mantri hai to aise hi hota hai (this is how it is when the PM is from BJP). Security is important, but why can't they give a proper 2-day notice? The parking rules are strict—they'll tow vehicles. I'll just work from home tomorrow to avoid the hassle.
