Sean Penn bags Oscar for 'One Battle After Another' in 'Best Supporting Actor' category, skips ceremony

Sean Penn wins his third Oscar for 'One Battle After Another' in the Best Supporting Actor category but was not present to accept the award.

"Sean Penn couldn't be here tonight--or didn't want to, - Kieran Culkin"

Los Angeles, March 16

Actor Sean Penn has added one more Oscar to his kitty, courtesy of his performance in 'One Battle After Another'.

On Sunday, he was announced as the winner of Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Sean Penn did not attend the ceremony to accept his award. It was accepted for him by presenter Kieran Culkin.

"Sean Penn couldn't be here tonight--or didn't want to," quipped Kieran Culkin, last year's best supporting actor winner, after he announced the category onstage.

Sean Penn, now a three-time Oscar winner, was nominated alongside Benicio del Toro (also for One Battle After Another), Delroy Lindo for Sinners and Stellan Skarsgard for Sentimental Value.

'One Battle After Another' follows Bob, played by DiCaprio, a former revolutionary living off the grid with his daughter, Willa. Their lives take a dark turn when Bob's old enemy, Steven J Lockjaw, played by Sean Penn, returns after 16 years. When Willa goes missing, Bob must confront both his past and his nemesis in a gripping tale of survival and redemption.

Penn has two previous Oscars, both for best actor, in 2009's "Milk" and 2004's "Mystic River," and three previous Oscar nominations.

Respectfully, I think it's a bit disrespectful to not attend when you've won such a prestigious award. So many actors dream of that moment. The presenter's joke was funny, but it highlights the awkwardness. Great actor, questionable move.

Three Oscars! What an achievement. The plot with DiCaprio sounds amazing. Indian cinema also has such intense stories of survival and redemption. Would love to see a collaboration someday. Congrats to Penn!

He's always been a bit of a maverick, hasn't he? Not showing up is very on-brand for Sean Penn. The film's premise is fantastic. A battle of titans with DiCaprio and Penn. Must watch!

Awards are nice, but the real win is when the audience loves your work. I'm more interested in the story—sounds like a solid father-daughter drama with action. Hope the OTT platforms pick it up quickly for us here.

Tough category with Delroy Lindo and Stellan Skarsgård too. Penn must have been outstanding to win. The man is a powerhouse actor. Skipping the show is his loss, but the trophy is still his. Well done.
