SAIL, EdCIL sign MoU to set up smart digital classrooms in schools near operational areas
New Delhi, May 28
State-owned steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with EdCIL Limited to establish Smart Digital Classrooms in schools located around SAIL's operational areas as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
According to the Ministry of Steel, the initiative aims to support access to technology-enabled learning in areas surrounding SAIL's plants and operational units.
The MoU was signed on May 26, with the objective of promoting inclusive education and improving learning outcomes through digital infrastructure in schools.
The collaboration is aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal-4 (SDG-4), which focuses on ensuring "inclusive, equitable, quality education and learning opportunities for all."
The ministry said the project seeks to "promote inclusive education and enhance learning outcomes" through the installation of Smart Digital Classrooms.
The agreement was signed between Steel Authority of India Limited and EdCIL (India) Limited in the presence of K K Singh, Director (Personnel), SAIL.
Senior officials from both organisations were also present during the signing ceremony.
The companies said the initiative forms part of SAIL's CSR efforts to strengthen digital learning infrastructure and improve educational access in schools near its operational areas.

This is a step in the right direction for NEP 2020 implementation. But why only schools near operational areas? Every child in India deserves smart classrooms. Still, I'm glad SAIL is using its CSR funds meaningfully instead of just building parks and painting walls.
As someone who works in tech education, I'm cautiously optimistic. Smart digital classrooms only work if there's reliable electricity and internet connectivity - which is often a challenge in rural India. I hope EdCIL has a plan for that. Otherwise, this is just expensive furniture collecting dust.
Excellent CSR initiative! This is how PSUs should use their resources - for nation-building. The focus on SDG-4 and NEP 2020 alignment shows they've done their homework. I just hope they also think about digital content in regional languages, not just English. Our children need to learn in their mother tongue first.
Finally, something for the children near industrial zones! I grew up near a steel plant and saw how basic our schools were. Teachers barely had chalk, forget smart boards. This is a welcome change! 🎉 But will there be regular monitoring and evaluation? CSR projects often look good on paper but fail in practice.
Good to see Indian PSUs taking education technology seriously. The NEP 2020 integration is smart. However, I wonder about the sustainability - what happens when the smart boards break or software needs updates after a year? CSR funds shouldn't just be for installation; they need to cover long-term maintenance. Hope EdCIL has a 5-year plan for this.
