Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday expressed condolences over the loss of lives in Uttar Pradesh due to the thunderstorm and heavy rains and wished for speedy recovery to all those injured.

In a letter to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Putin said, "Please accept our deepest condolences on the numerous casualties and widespread destruction caused by the cyclone in Uttar Pradesh. Please convey my words of sympathy and support to the families and friends of the victims, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery to all those affected by the natural disaster."

Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner Harikesh Bhaskar on Thursday informed that at least 104 people have lost their lives across Uttar Pradesh due to relentless rain, lightning, and thunderstorms in various parts of the state over the past 36 to 48 hours.

The Relief Commissioner added that continuous monitoring is being conducted, and the 24-hour Integrated Control and Command Centre remains fully operational.

Orders have also been issued to all officials to conduct field inspections. Furthermore, the Chief Minister has announced compensation measures, and financial relief is currently being disbursed to the affected individuals.

Earlier in the day, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath directed state officials to provide immediate assistance to victims of the recent storms and lightning. The Chief Minister has ordered the prompt release of compensation following reports of casualties and property damage over the last 24 hours.

Yogi directed officials to immediately visit the affected sites and provide assistance to the victims, release compensation and instructed districts to provide updates on the situation every 3 hours.

He has further asked all District Magistrates to prioritise relief work. He also directed that compensation disbursal, rescue operations, and other related work should be updated on social media.

According to the press release, information regarding loss of human lives, livestock loss, and crop damage has come from 19 districts, including Barabanki, Bahraich, Kanpur Dehat, Basti, Sambhal, Hardoi, and Unnao.

Additionally, 130 livestock (both large and small) have perished, and 98 houses have sustained damage.

It's sad to see so many families affected by this thunderstorm. I hope the relief reaches the victims quickly. The 3-hour updates from district magistrates sound like a good step for transparency.

Why is Russia's president commenting on UP weather? 😅 But seriously, this is heartbreaking. My cousin is from Unnao and said the lightning was scary. Glad CM Yogi is monitoring but ground-level execution matters more.

Deepest condolences to all affected. It's a natural disaster but the death toll is alarming. Hope the 19 districts get full support. The livestock and crop damage will hurt farmers even more. 🙏

We appreciate international solidarity, but let's focus on our own response. 98 houses damaged, 130 livestock lost - these are real families suffering. Hope the CM's compensation reaches them without delay. Also, why does this keep happening every year in UP?

Putin's message is diplomatic, but the real story is the poor disaster preparedness in rural Uttar Pradesh. 104 deaths from thunderstorms is too many in 2025. Need better infrastructure and early warnings.
