Hyderabad, January 29

Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov, as part of the Russian delegation led by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Russia Gennady Abramenkov, visited the international civil aviation exhibition "Wings India 2026" in Hyderabad, Telangana on Wednesday.

On the sidelines of the air show, the head of the diplomatic mission, together with Gennady Abramenkov and CEO of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Vadim Badekha, toured the Russian part of the exhibition, in particular the Superjet 100 and Il-114-300 aircraft, took a demonstration flight aboard the latter, and addressed the media.

The Ambassador also took part in the ceremonial signing of an agreement on joint activities between the UAC and the Indian aircraft manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, governing cooperation on the licensed production of the Superjet aircraft in India.

Continuing the official program, the Russian delegation joined a plenary session of a thematic conference, where the key speakers from the Indian side included Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation of India, and Vipin Kumar, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India.

The first day of the exhibition concluded with a meeting between Russian representatives and India's Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, during which issues of bilateral cooperation in the sector were discussed, with an emphasis on expanding the number of joint projects.

Last month, the Russia-India Business Forum 2025, led by the Roscongress Foundation and held alongside President Vladimir Putin's state visit, concluded with a unified commitment to expand trade, investment, and sectoral collaboration across both countries.

According to a release, over two days, the Forum convened senior officials, industry leaders, investors, and policy institutions for dialogues, B2B meetings, and multi-sector consultations aimed at shaping long-term bilateral growth.

Discussions across the Forum underscored the growing convergence in pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, machinery, food products, technical textiles, and marine equipment, while also identifying new joint-venture opportunities in medical technology, hospital infrastructure, cybersecurity, AI, digital innovation, and advanced manufacturing. Delegates emphasised the importance of strengthening SME participation, improving logistics and regulatory frameworks, and enabling stable cross-border trade mechanisms.

Interesting development. While diversification is good, I hope HAL and the ministry have done thorough due diligence on the Superjet's operational history and long-term support ecosystem. We need reliable regional aircraft for our UDAN scheme, not just political agreements.

Russia has been a time-tested partner. This cooperation, along with discussions on pharmaceuticals and engineering goods, shows the relationship is evolving beyond defence. Hope the logistics and regulatory frameworks improve to make trade smoother for SMEs as highlighted.

Hope HAL gets a good technology transfer deal and not just an assembly line. We need to build our own R&D muscle. The Il-114-300 is also interesting for regional connectivity. Jai Hind!

With all due respect to the partnership, I'm a bit concerned. The global aviation market is dominated by Airbus and Boeing for a reason - reliability, global support, and resale value. Will Indian airlines actually want to buy a Russian-origin aircraft given the current geopolitical complexities and potential spare parts issues? This needs clear answers.
