Rajeev Krishna Appointed as Uttar Pradesh's New DGP After 4-Year Gap

The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has appointed Rajeev Krishna as the new Director General of Police, ending a four-year wait for a full-term police chief. Krishna, a 1991-batch IPS officer, was selected from a UPSC panel of three senior officers. He previously served as Acting DGP and has held key roles including Director General (Intelligence) and Chairman of the UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board. His appointment prioritizes crime control, technology-driven policing, and maintaining law and order to attract investment.

Lucknow, May 31

Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government announced the appointment of Acting DGP Rajeev Krishna as the new Director General of Police of the state on Sunday. An order to this effect was released in a notification, signed by Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Prasad.

The move brings an end to the prolonged wait for a full-term DGP for the state, as the post purportedly remained vacant after the removal of then DGP Mukul Goyal from the post in 2022.

Rajeev Krishna has been commanding the state police force in the capacity of Acting DGP, and now, with the announcement of his elevation as the permanent police chief, this ends a long hiatus of four years for the top post.

The 1991 batch officer Rajiv Krishna's name as the new DGP was finalised, following deliberations by a panel of three senior officers submitted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The Commission had forwarded the names of 1990-batch IPS officer Renuka Mishra, 1991-batch IPS officers Piyush Anand and Rajiv Krishna, to the state government.

The UP government decided to entrust the leadership of the police force to Rajiv Krishna, taking into account administrative experience, expertise in law-and-order management, and organisational capabilities.

His appointment comes at a juncture when the state government has prioritised crime control, technology-driven policing, and maintaining a law-and-order environment conducive to investment.

Rajiv Krishna, in his three-decade-long policing career, has served in various pivotal positions related to intelligence operations, law-and-order maintenance, police modernisation, and administrative management.

Prior to assuming the role of Acting DGP, he held key responsibilities such as Director General (Intelligence) and Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board.

Rajiv Krishna also holds significant experience in field policing; he has served as the Police Chief in several key districts, including Lucknow, Agra, Mathura, Etawah, and Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida). During his tenure in Etawah, his role in the operations conducted against bandit gangs garnered particular acclaim.

In addition to this, he has served as the ADG of the Lucknow Zone and, while on central deputation, held the position of IG (Operations) in the Border Security Force (BSF).

Rajiv Krishna was born on June 26, 1969, in Gautam Buddha Nagar. As an officer of the 1991 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), he joined the services on September 15, 1991. Throughout his career, having earned promotions at various levels, he attained the rank of Director General of Police in February 2024.

Good appointment. The UPSC panel did well to recommend him. I just hope he focuses on modernizing policing with technology as mentioned, and also tackles the backlog of pending cases. Women's safety should be a top priority too. Let's see some action now.

Interesting timing. The article mentions "investment-friendly environment" - that's the real focus here. UP wants to attract businesses, and a strong, permanent police chief sends the right message. Rajeev Krishna's BSF experience handling border issues might be useful for internal security too.

I'm cautiously optimistic. He's been acting DGP for a while, so he knows the system. But UP has deep-rooted issues like political interference in policing. Will he be allowed to work independently? Let's hope the government gives him a free hand. Also, surprised Renuka Mishra wasn't chosen - she's senior and equally qualified.

Four years without a permanent DGP? That's poor administrative planning. Anyway, Rajeev Krishna seems capable - worked in Lucknow, Noida, and even in BSF. He's seen it all. Just want to see visible improvement in crime control, especially in rural areas. Time to deliver! 💪

Congrats to Rajeev Krishna! His career trajectory is impressive - from district police chief to DGP. The article highlights his anti-bandit operations in Etawah, which shows he's not a desk officer. Hopefully, UP's law and order situation improves under his watch. Also, nice to see a local
