Rajasthan Panchayat Polls: Final Voter List Set for Feb 25 Publication

The Rajasthan State Election Commission has directed district administrations to prepare for the upcoming Panchayat elections, with the final photo-based voter list slated for publication on February 25. The Commission has clarified this list will be final, with no amendments allowed, and only listed voters will be eligible to participate. While elections for Panch and Sarpanch will use ballot boxes, polls for Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti members are likely to be conducted via EVMs, some of which are being procured from Madhya Pradesh. These elections, previously delayed due to issues with voter revision and OBC reservation, must now be held before April 15 as directed by the High Court.

Rajasthan Panchayat Elections: Final voter list to be published on Feb 25

Jaipur, Jan 24

Preparations for the upcoming Panchayat elections in Rajasthan have gathered pace. Even before the formal announcement of election dates, the State Election Commission has issued important instructions to district administrations to ensure the timely and smooth conduct of the polls.

According to orders issued by the Chief Electoral Officer of the State Election Commission, Rajesh Verma, photo-based Panchayat voter lists are being prepared based on the existing Assembly constituency voter lists. The final publication of the Panchayat voter list will take place on February 25.

The Commission has clarified that this will be the final voter list for the Panchayat elections, and no further amendments will be allowed after its publication. Only voters whose names appear in this final list will be eligible to cast their votes in the Panchayat elections.

The Commission has decided that elections for Panch and Sarpanch will be conducted using ballot boxes, while elections for Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti members are likely to be held through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). For this purpose, EVMs are also being procured from the Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission.

Due to issues related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and OBC reservation, the Panchayat and urban local body elections in Rajasthan have been repeatedly postponed, leading to uncertainty. However, following the High Court's directions, the State Election Commission has intensified preparations.

The High Court has directed that Panchayat and urban local body elections be held before April 15, raising the possibility that the election schedule may be announced soon.

Good to see preparations are on track. Using ballot boxes for Sarpanch elections is the right move for rural areas where tech literacy can be low. But procuring EVMs from MP? Hope they are tested thoroughly. 🤞

The OBC reservation issue has held up development work for too long. Local bodies need elected representatives to function. Hope the elections are peaceful and fair. Jai Rajasthan!

A respectful criticism: The announcement says "no further amendments" after Feb 25. What about genuine errors or people who turn 18 after that date? The process should have a small window for corrections, at least for clerical mistakes.

Interesting to see the hybrid system - ballot boxes and EVMs. In my state, it's all EVMs now. Is there a reason for the mix in Rajasthan? Is it a cost issue or a trust issue with machines in very remote areas?

My parents live in a village near Jodhpur. They've been calling me to check if their names are on the list. This final publication date will help. Time for everyone to check carefully! Gram panchayat is where real change happens. 🙏
