Rajasthan Signs Clean Energy Pact with California, Sets Thermal Power Record

Rajasthan has signed a landmark clean energy partnership with California to exchange technology and policy expertise. The state also achieved a record 94.6% operational efficiency at its thermal power plants, generating 7,171 MW in a single day. Energy Minister Hiralal Nagar emphasized sustaining this performance for long-term energy security. The collaboration focuses on battery storage, smart grids, and electric vehicle infrastructure.

Rajasthan govt signs clean energy pact with California, makes record thermal output

Jaipur, June 26

Rajasthan has achieved two major milestones in its power sector, reinforcing its position as a leader in both conventional and clean energy, government officials said on Friday.

While the state's thermal power plants have recorded their highest-ever operational efficiency, Rajasthan has also entered into a landmark clean energy partnership with the US state of California to accelerate the transition towards a modern, sustainable power ecosystem.

State Energy Minister Hiralal Nagar announced the twin achievements during a virtual programme held in Jaipur, saying that the state government's priority is to ensure affordable, uninterrupted and reliable 24×7 electricity supply while preparing Rajasthan for the next generation of renewable energy technologies.

The Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RVUNL) has achieved a historic milestone by operating its thermal power stations at 94.6 per cent of their installed capacity, one of the highest utilisation levels recorded by a thermal power utility.

According to the State Energy Minister, all 23 operational generating units collectively produced 7,171 MW of electricity in a single day, marking the highest-ever generation by the state-owned utility.

"Earlier, technical issues and equipment limitations prevented us from operating at such high levels. Our objective now is not merely to create a one-day record but to sustain this performance throughout the year and set new benchmarks in annual power generation," Minister Nagar said.

In another significant development, the Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) signed a virtual Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the California Energy Commission, opening a new chapter in international cooperation on renewable energy and grid management.

The partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of technology, policy expertise and regulatory best practices in areas such as renewable energy integration, battery storage and smart electricity networks.

"Although Rajasthan and California are separated by thousands of kilometres, both share a common vision of expanding clean energy and building a sustainable future. This collaboration will enable both regions to learn from each other's experiences and technological innovations," Minister Nagar added.

The agreement will focus on several emerging areas of the power sector, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), advanced battery storage technology, will help store excess solar power generated during the day and supply electricity during peak evening demand, improving the reliability of renewable energy.

The collaboration will support the development of smart grids, advanced metering infrastructure and digital power management systems to reduce transmission losses, improve efficiency and curb electricity theft. Both sides will cooperate in developing robust electricity infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations through joint research, technical cooperation and knowledge sharing.

The state government believes the partnership will strengthen Rajasthan's position as one of India's leading renewable energy states while complementing its rapid expansion in solar and wind power generation.

With record-breaking thermal generation ensuring immediate energy security and international collaboration paving the way for next-generation clean technologies, Rajasthan is positioning itself to meet rising power demand while advancing its long-term green energy goals, officials said.

As someone working in the power sector, I'm curious how Rajasthan will sustain this thermal output with monsoon approaching. Also, the partnership with California on smart grids and EV infrastructure is exactly the kind of forward-thinking policy India needs. Let's hope it translates into real implementation, not just another MoU on paper.

Finally some good news from Rajasthan's power sector! 🎉 The 7,171 MW single-day generation is no joke. But I hope the government doesn't get complacent with thermal achievements—we still have air quality issues in cities like Jaipur and Kota. The California collaboration for battery storage is promising, but we need local manufacturing too. Make in India for batteries!

Dual approach is fine, but I'm skeptical about the MoU with California. Past international partnerships often end up as photo-ops. Show us the timeline for battery storage deployment and smart meter rollout. Also, with Rajasthan's desert, solar potential is immense—why not push for 100% renewable by 2030? Thermal is still polluting. Just my two rupees.

Interesting timing—Rajasthan pushing thermal while also signing a clean energy pact. I understand the need for baseload power, but 94.6% utilization is incredibly high for thermal plants. Usually that leads to more maintenance issues. Hope they have a proper plan. The EV charging infrastructure collaboration is welcome though—Rajasthan's highways need more charging points for electric vehicles.

Great initiative! Rajasthan has the sun and the space for solar. But we also need to address the issue of power theft and transmission losses—the article
