The roundtable was held at the Prime Minister's residence in the national capital on Thursday, January 8, ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled to take place in India next month.

According to an official statement from the Prime Minister's Office, the 12 startups had qualified under the AI for ALL: Global Impact Challenge and used the platform to present their ideas, products and ongoing work.

The participating startups are working across a wide range of domains, including Indian language foundation models, multilingual large language models, speech-to-text, text-to-audio and text-to-video technologies. Very encouraging to see PM taking direct interest. The emphasis on regional languages is crucial. My mother only understands Tamil; if AI can help bridge the digital divide for millions like her, it will be a true revolution.

Good step, but execution is key. We've seen many "vision" announcements before. Hope this translates into actual funding, clear regulations, and infrastructure support for these startups, not just photo-ops.

As someone working in tech, the focus on "frugal innovation" is so important. We don't need to copy Silicon Valley's resource-heavy models. India can lead in creating affordable, scalable AI solutions for the global south.

Ethical AI rooted in Indian values sounds great on paper. But who defines these "values"? We need a transparent, multi-stakeholder framework involving technologists, ethicists, and civil society to avoid bias being baked in.

Healthcare diagnostics and Indian language models! These are areas where AI can have an immediate, massive impact on common people's lives. Hope these startups get the mentorship and market access they need to succeed. All the best to them!
