7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Philippines, Tremors Felt

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck the Philippines on Monday. The quake occurred at 5:07 am Indian Standard Time at a depth of 93 kilometers. A second tremor of magnitude 6.4 followed shortly after at a depth of 79 kilometers. The National Centre for Seismology reported the details, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Manila, June 8

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck the Philippines on Monday, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology.

In a post on X, it said that the earthquake occurred at 5:07 am Indian Standard Time, at a depth of 93 kilometres.

"EQ of M: 7.7, On: 08/06/2026 05:07:45 IST, Lat: 5.635 N, Long: 125.147 E, Depth: 93 Km, Location: Philippines," the NCS said.

Shortly after, another tremor of magnitude 6.4 was also reported at 5:18 am IST at a depth of 79 kilometres, located at 5.605°N latitude and 125.408°E longitude.

"EQ of M: 6.4, On: 08/06/2026 05:18:10 IST, Lat: 5.605 N, Long: 125.408 E, Depth: 79 Km, Location: Philippines," the NCS said.

Earthquakes can occur anywhere between the Earth's surface and about 700 kilometres below the surface. For scientific purposes, this earthquake depth range of 0 - 700 km is divided into three zones: shallow, intermediate, and deep, as per USGS data.

Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep. In general, the term "deep-focus earthquakes" is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km, the USGS states.

M 7.7 is no joke! The Pacific Ring of Fire is indeed volatile. I wish our disaster management agencies take notes from such events. India's own earthquake preparedness in Himalayan region needs serious improvement, especially in construction norms.

The depth of 93 km provides some buffer against surface damage, but it's still very serious. The 6.4 aftershock is concerning too. I've lived near the San Andreas fault, so I know the pattern. Hope the Philippines has good early warning systems in place.

Our NCS is doing good work in providing real-time data for international events. But I wonder if we are investing enough in domestic seismology. Coastal areas like Andaman & Nicobar need robust monitoring systems. We are lucky this was far from our shores.

Alert to all Indian travellers in Mindanao area! Remain cautious of tsunamis in coastal regions. The shallow-to-intermediate depth means aftershocks could continue for days. Let's not forget the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami tragedy. Preparedness is key.

Sending love from Canada to all affected! ❤️ It's interesting to see how the NCS tracks these events globally. The 93 km depth classifies as intermediate focus, which often cause less surface rupture but still huge ground shaking. Hope everyone is prepared.
