PM Modi's Oslo visit reflects growing partnership, shared ambitions: Norwegian PM

Oslo, May 18

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on Monday underscored the importance of deeper cooperation between India and Norway in upholding a rules-based international order amid growing geopolitical tensions and rising protectionism. He also said that both countries must remain united in opposing the use of diplomacy, trade and technology as instruments of pressure in global affairs.

Addressing a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Store said, "We have to stand up against those who weaponise diplomacy, trade, and technology. At a time of rising protectionism and more tense geopolitical dynamics, it's more important than ever to stand together for a rule-based order. And, we have been able today to discuss some of the major issues confronting us, such as the war in Ukraine and the war in the Middle East. I appreciate this direct contact between diplomats in Norway and India in handling and addressing these issues."

He further noted that while India and Norway may not always agree on every issue, both remain committed democratic partners that manage differences through respectful dialogue.

"India does not always see eye to eye on all issues. Nobody does, and we are both respectful democracies who handle those issues in ways that live up to democratic standards. But what unites us today, Prime Minister, is more important: a belief that cooperation delivers better results than unilateralism and isolation, especially when it comes to global challenges," Store emphasised.

Highlighting the importance of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Norway, Store said that in a world marked by uncertainty, rapid change, and rising divisions, it is vital to deepen engagement with countries that share core values. He observed that shared democratic principles outweigh differences in approach.

"In times of uncertainties and rapid changes in the world, polarisation and conflicts, it is important to strengthen and build contacts with countries with whom we share fundamental values. Differences there may be, but they are small compared to the big challenges out there on the world scene, and we need to work together. Partnerships matter, especially between democracies that share common interests and abide by common rules in the global community," the Norwegian PM stated.

"So in this spirit, your Oslo visit is important, Prime Minister. It reflects the growing partnership between India and Norway and the shared ambition to really strengthen our cooperation in many fields. We may be different in geography, culture, size, and history, but we have much to gain from working more closely together. And today, we will be signing and underlining a lot of agreements that take this partnership forward," he added.

Store stated that India and Norway are elevating the relationship to a green strategic partnership, creating a framework to collaborate on knowledge, resources, and ambitions for the green transition, where both countries are equally committed to success.

While I appreciate the diplomatic optics, I'm cautiously optimistic. Norway has strong human rights standards and environmental policies. I hope this partnership also pushes for better labor conditions in India and accountability for pollution. But yes, democracies cooperating is better than autocratic alliances any day.

This is a masterstroke in India's foreign policy. Norway is a key country in the Arctic Council and has excellent tech. PM Modi is smartly building bridges with Europe beyond the usual big power games. The green partnership focus is smart - we can learn from Norway's electric vehicle revolution.

I remember Norway's role in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks - they helped with witness protection and legal support. That's the kind of trust we need. This visit feels like it's building on that foundation. But I hope we're not just signing MoUs that gather dust. Show us the results, please.

Interesting to see Norway positioning itself as a bridge between India and Europe. They're not US or China, but they're influential in climate tech and maritime law. The comment about "weaponizing diplomacy, trade, and technology" is clearly aimed at China and Russia. Smart alliance building by India.

Norway has one of the world's best sovereign wealth funds ($1.7 trillion!) from oil. If India can tap into that for infrastructure or green projects, it's a huge win. But we need to ensure transparency in how that money is used. No more sweetheart deals for cronies. Let's use this wisely.
