PM Modi helps participants correct their posture as they perform yoga at IDY celebrations in Kolkata
Kolkata, June 21
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who led International Day of Yoga 2026 Celebrations at Kolkata's Historic Red Road on Sunday, later also helped participants correct their posture as they performed Yoga during the Common Protocol session.
Participants performed yoga with full enthusiasm and were guided by the instructions from the stage.
The 12th edition of the International Day of Yoga is being observed across the country and around the world on Sunday under the theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', highlighting the role of Yoga in promoting healthy and active living across all stages of life.
This year's theme, 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing', reflects the growing global emphasis on healthy and active living across the lifespan. As populations age and non-communicable diseases and lifestyle-related health concerns rise globally, the emphasis is shifting from simply adding years to life to enhancing health span, quality of life and overall well-being.
Emphasising that yoga empowers individuals to maintain their physical vitality, mental strength and resilience against lifestyle diseases as they age, the Prime Minister said the practice helps maintain endurance and human potential.
The Prime Minister, who addressed the main ceremony of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) at Kolkata's Red Road, said the theme of "Yoga for Healthy Ageing" should not be viewed as being limited to senior citizens but should inspire people of all age groups to pursue lifelong wellness.
"When we speak of Yoga for healthy ageing, it means that we can work to ensure that age doesn't reduce human potential. Yoga can help human life aspire for constant growth. Our target must be to be more flexible at 40 than we were at 20. Our target must be more energetic at 50 than we were at 30. Our target must be to be more resistant to lifestyle diseases at 70 than we were at 50. This is where Yoga can help us," the Prime Minister said.
The United Nations had proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014. The proposal, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 69th session of the UN, was supported by 175 member states.

Great to see Kolkata hosting such events. Yoga is our heritage and PM taking time to guide participants personally shows leadership from the front. The Red Road is a perfect venue, historical and grand!
As a foreigner living in India, I find this truly inclusive. The theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' is universally relevant - my grandmother back in the UK would benefit from this mindset. Modiji's attention to detail is quite something.
Nice gesture but wouldn't it be better if he focused on policy changes to make yoga accessible in schools and rural areas? Many villages still lack basic yoga instructors. Still, good to see the global push continues.
Amazing how IDY has grown from a UN proposal to a global movement in just 12 years! The Kolkata event with PM personally helping participants is just incredible. Yoga is truly for everyone, regardless of age or background.
As someone who does yoga daily, I appreciate the PM's emphasis on lifelong wellness. The "more energetic at 50 than 30" challenge is exactly what modern sedentary lifestyles need. Good on India for leading this global conversation.
Hats off to the PM for his dedication! Correcting postures shows he
