PM Modi gifting 'Chak Hao' to UAE Queen Mother brings pride to Manipur: CM

Imphal, May 22

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Friday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi presenting the GI-tagged black rice 'Chak Hao' to the Queen Mother of the UAE was a matter of immense pride for the people of the state.

In different social media posts, the Chief Minister said the gesture of the Prime Minister showcased Manipur's unique identity on the global stage and honoured the hard work of the state's farmer's community.

In a Facebook post, Singh wrote : "It is a matter of immense pride for every Manipuri that Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji chose to present Manipur's renowned GI-Tagged Chak Hao (Black Rice) to the Queen Mother of the UAE."

"This thoughtful gesture not only showcases the unique identity of Manipur on the global stage but also honours the hard work of our farmers, the richness of our land, and the enduring traditions that have nurtured this extraordinary crop for generations," the Chief Minister said.

According to Singh, Chak Hao is more than a delicacy, it is a symbol of Manipur's heritage, resilience, and agricultural excellence.

"Its recognition at the highest international level reflects the growing appreciation for our indigenous products and the immense potential of our state. Let us continue to support our farmers, promote local products, and take pride in sharing the best of Manipur with the world," the Chief Minister stated.

Prime Minister Modi recently concluded a landmark five-nation tour covering the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy.

Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla recently while addressing at and event in Central Agricultural University (CAU) in Imphal pointed out that products such as Chak Hao (black rice), Kachai Lemon, and Tamenglong Orange reflect the state's cultural and ecological wealth.

With scientific support, value addition, and improved market access, these products can drive rural prosperity and achieve global recognition, the Governor added. He had emphasised the need to integrate traditional agricultural practices with modern technology, promote climate-resilient farming, strengthen infrastructure and market linkages, and foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem among youth.

While it's nice that Manipur gets some attention, I hope this isn't just a photo-op. What about real support for our farmers - like better MSP, irrigation, and market access? GI tags are good but without infrastructure, it's just a label. Still, credit where due - it's a positive step. 😊

Chak Hao black rice is amazing - I've tried it and it's delicious! So glad to see our indigenous products getting international recognition. This is what 'Vocal for Local' should look like. Kudos to PM Modi and CM Singh for highlighting Manipur's unique identity. 🎉

As someone who works in agriculture here in the US, this is very interesting. Our farmers would love to learn about unique indigenous crops like Chak Hao. India has so much to offer the world beyond IT and textiles. Smart move by Modi to showcase regional specialties during foreign tours. Respect.

Bhai, it's good that Chak Hao got a mention but let's not forget the ground reality. Manipur has been facing such severe violence and instability - our farmers can't even work in peace. The government should focus on bringing peace first, then talk about global recognition. Just saying... 🙏

This makes me proud as a North East Indian! Our region has so many unique products like Chak Hao, Kachai Lemon, and Tamenglong Orange. Finally, the rest of India and the world are starting to recognize our heritage. More power to our farmers and local entrepreneurs! 💪
