PM Modi tells Canadian counterpart Mark Carney India is deeply concerned over Iran tensions, urges dialogue and restraint for regional stability.

"India's stance on the several ongoing tensions around the world is firm. - PM Narendra Modi"

New Delhi, March 2

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney discussed ongoing global issues, including the current situation in Iran, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday.

While addressing a special briefing on Carney's visit to India on Monday, Secretary (East) in MEA, P Kumaran, stated that PM Modi, during the meeting, said that India is deeply concerned about the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region. He mentioned that PM Modi has urged all sides to avoid escalation and follow the path of dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions.

"As you would expect, this is a hot issue right now, and therefore it was discussed. Prime Minister took the opportunity to convey that India is deeply concerned at the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region in general. He said we have urged all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and prioritise the safety of civilians. He also said dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address the underlying issues," said Kumaran.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all States must be mentioned. Our missions in the region are in touch with Indian nationals and various community associations and have issued advisories asking them to remain vigilant, stay in contact with the missions and follow local security guidance," he added.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi expressed concerns over the situation in West Asia and said that India will continue to work closely with all the countries in the region to ensure the safety and security of its nationals.

Addressing a joint press meet with PM Carney, PM Modi said, "India's stance on the several ongoing tensions around the world is firm. We have always called for maintaining peace and stability, and when two democracies stand together, the voice for peace becomes even stronger."

Speaking on the security concerns in the Gulf nations, he said, "The current situation in West Asia is a matter of deep concern for us. India supports the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. To ensure the safety of all Indian nations, we will continue to work closely with all countries in the region."

These remarks come amid an escalating conflict in West Asia that erupted following joint US-Israel strikes on Iran, aimed at degrading Tehran's missile capabilities and broader military infrastructure.

The opening wave of the operation reportedly killed senior figures in the Iranian leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering a sweeping response from Tehran in the form of drone and missile attacks targetting US assets, regional capitals and allied forces across the Gulf.

As someone with family working in Dubai, this is very reassuring. The government's proactive communication with the community and issuing advisories shows they are on top of the situation. Hope the tensions de-escalate soon for everyone's sake.

Strong message. India must stand firm on its principles of peace and sovereignty. The world should listen when two major democracies speak together. However, I hope our words are backed by concrete diplomatic action behind the scenes.

Good to see India taking a clear stand without getting dragged into anyone else's conflict. Our foreign policy should always prioritize our national interest and the safety of Indians abroad. The focus on civilian safety is especially important.

Respectfully, while the statement is good, it feels a bit generic. "Urging all sides" is standard diplomatic language. Given India's growing global stature and strategic interests in the Gulf, could we be playing a more active mediation role?

This is a volatile situation with direct implications for our energy security and diaspora. PM Modi's firm stance is correct. We cannot afford another major war, especially in a region so crucial for our economy. Hope peace prevails. 🙏
