Pentagon Adds Alibaba, BYD, Baidu to China Military Blacklist; Warns US Firms

The Pentagon has expanded its 1260H List of Chinese military-linked companies, adding major firms including Alibaba, Baidu, BYD, NIO, and WuXi AppTec. US Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar warned American businesses against engaging with these entities, calling for their delisting from US exchanges. Moolenaar also highlighted the bipartisan BIOSECURE Act, signed into law in December, to protect Americans' medical data from Chinese biotech firms. The additions follow a December letter from Congress requesting companies like BOE, RoboSense, and Unitree be included on the list.

Pentagon updates Chinese military firms list; warns American business against ties with PLA-linked companies

Washington DC, June 9

The Pentagon has expanded its list of Chinese military-linked companies, adding several major firms including Alibaba Group, Baidu, BYD, NIO and WuXi AppTec -- in a move aimed at warning American businesses and government agencies against engagement with entities connected to China's military establishment.

The details were shared by the US Select Committee on China in a statement on Monday.

As per the statement, the Pentagon announced additions to its list of known Chinese military companies (1260H List) with the additions including numerous Chinese companies Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar and other congressional leaders have requested be added to the list.

Chairman Moolenaar said that the updated list of Chinese military companies serves as a "warning" to American businesses, all levels of government, and the American people and added that these Chinese companies are working with the Chinese military against America's national interests.

"Any of them that are publicly traded on U.S. exchanges should be immediately delisted and their products should be removed from supply chains our country depends on. American companies must stop doing business with these threats to our national security, otherwise they are enabling China's military ascendance", he said.

He further recalled and thanked the support to the bipartisan BIOSECURE Act that was signed into law in December, Americans' medical data will be protected from BGI and Wuxi Apptec which he termed as "two malicious Chinese biotech companies that enable the PLA's biological experimentation".

As per the statement, the new additions to the list includes., "Alibaba Group Holding Limited, Baidu, Inc., BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., BYD Company Limited, CALB Group Co., Ltd. EVE Energy Co., Ltd. Hangzhou Yushu Technology Co., Ltd. (Unitree), JA Solar Technology Co., Ltd. NIO, Inc., Novogene Company Limited, RoboSense Technology Co., Ltd. Tianma Microelectronics Co., Ltd., TP-Link Technologies Co., Ltd., Trina Solar Co., Ltd., WuXi AppTec Co., Ltd., Zhongji Innolight Co., Ltd."

These come after in December, Moolenaar and other members of Congress sent a letter requesting BOE, RoboSense, Tianma, Unitree, Wuxi Apptec, and other companies be added to the 1260H List.

Bada interesting move yaar. But honestly, these companies like Baidu and NIO are civilian tech firms. The US is stretching the definition of 'military connection'. Feels like economic warfare in disguise. 😕

I'm conflicted. On one hand, China's military modernization is real and they do use civilian tech. On the other, this list seems politically motivated. The BIOSECURE Act targeting medical data from WuXi AppTec - that part makes sense for privacy. But adding solar and car companies? Bit much.

As an American living in Mumbai, this is worrying. Our government is scaring businesses away from global partners. These Chinese companies provide affordable solar panels and EVs. Cutting ties will hurt American consumers and clean energy goals. 🤷‍♀️

China and US are playing chess while we're just watching. For India, this is both opportunity and warning. Opportunity to attract companies leaving China's ecosystem, but also a reminder that tech decoupling is real. India should strengthen its own semiconductor and EV supply chain. Otherwise next target could be us.

Pentagon ka list hai toh genuine concern hoga. But targeting Alibaba and Baidu feels like overreach. These are e-commerce and search engines. Unless they have concrete proof of military ties, this looks like protectionism. Remember how US banned Huawei? Same pattern. 🤔
