Over 7 crore ITRs filed for AY 2026-27, deadline Aug 31

The Income Tax Department announced that over 7 crore income tax returns have been filed for Assessment Year 2026-27. Taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to audit have until August 31, 2026, to file their returns. The department urged eligible taxpayers to file early rather than waiting until the last minute.

Over 7 crore ITRs have already been filed for AY 2026-27

New Delhi, Aug 28

More than 7 crore income tax returns have already been filed for Assessment Year 2026-27, the Income Tax Department said on Friday, urging taxpayers with business or professional income to complete their filings ahead of the deadline.

In a post on social media platform X, Income Tax India said that August 31, 2026, is the due date for filing ITRs for AY 2026-27 for taxpayers having business or professional income who are not required to get their accounts audited.

"Over 7 Crore ITRs have already been filed for A.Y. 2026-27!" the department said.

The Income Tax Department advised eligible taxpayers not to wait until the last minute and urged those falling under the non-audit category to file their returns at the earliest.

"August 31, 2026 is the due date for filing ITRs for AY 2026-27 for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to audit," the department stated.

"Don't wait till the last minute. File your (non-audit) business or professional income ITR today," it added.

The department's reminder comes as the August 31 deadline approaches for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to tax audit requirements.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, the department said that more than 5.9 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 by the July 31 deadline.

In a post on social media platform X, the department said, "Thank you, taxpayers! Over 5.9 crore ITRs were filed for AY 2026-27 by July 31st! Your trust and timely compliance provide the energy that fuels India's growth."

The latest figures indicate that over 40 lakh returns were filed on the final day, as taxpayers rushed to meet the July 31 due date for individuals and entities that are not required to get their accounts audited.
