India Adds 3.33 Lakh PNG Connections in a Month Amid West Asia Crisis

The government is aggressively promoting Piped Natural Gas connections to reduce reliance on Liquified Petroleum Gas, especially amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Over 3.33 lakh new PNG connections were provided in the last month alone, with nearly 3.61 lakh new registrations received. A policy incentivizes states to promote PNG expansion by offering them an additional 10% commercial LPG allocation. Over 3.33 lakh PNG connections added in a month as Govt pushes shift from LPG amid West Asia crisis

Govt promotes PNG to ease LPG demand amid West Asia crisis. Over 3.33 lakh connections added, states get incentives for expansion.

"The Indian government has taken several steps to promote PNG connections. This is also important because it will help ease the pressure on LPG. - Sujata Sharma"

New Delhi, April 2

The Government is pushing the expansion of Piped Natural Gas connections to reduce pressure on Liquified Petrolum Gas supplies amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said on Thursday.

Addressing an Inter-Ministerial Briefing on Recent Developments in West Asia, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said the government has taken several steps to promote PNG connections across the country.

"The Indian government has taken several steps to promote PNG connections. This is also important because it will help ease the pressure on LPG," Sharma said.

She also recalled that the government had issued an order to encourage states to promote PNG expansion through ease-of-doing-business measures.

"In this context, I would like to remind you that the Indian government had issued an order stating that 10 per cent additional commercial LPG will be provided if state governments promote PNG expansion through ease-of-doing-business measures," she said.

According to Sharma, several states have already benefited from the policy.

"Around eight states have been given additional allocation and applications from three states have been received and are under consideration," she added.

Highlighting the recent progress in expanding PNG access, Sharma said the government has seen a significant rise in new connections and registrations over the past month.

"In the last one month, around 3,33,000 PNG connections have been given. About 2.90 lakh new connections have been provided, and around 3.61 lakh new registrations have been received," she said.

The push for PNG connections comes as the government looks to diversify energy access and manage domestic LPG demand amid geopolitical uncertainties affecting global energy markets.

Great initiative, but the rollout needs to be faster in older residential societies. The paperwork and infrastructure upgrade costs for existing buildings are a major hurdle. The government should offer more subsidies for retrofitting.

Switched to PNG six months ago. Best decision ever! Consistent pressure, no more heavy cylinder lifting, and the billing is transparent. It's a relief, especially with the uncertainty in West Asia affecting fuel prices. More people should opt for it.

While diversification is good, I hope safety standards for PNG pipelines are rigorously maintained. We've seen incidents in the past. Expansion is great, but it should not compromise on safety audits and regular maintenance protocols.

The numbers are impressive – over 3 lakh connections in a month is no small feat. This shows a proactive approach to energy security. It also aligns with our goals of building cleaner infrastructure. A step in the right direction!

What about rural areas? Most of this expansion seems urban-centric. For true energy independence, clean cooking fuel needs to reach villages where people still rely on firewood or expensive LPG. Hope the next phase focuses on that.
