Mumbai, February 9

The Oscar-nominated film 'The Secret Agent' is finally coming to Indian cinemas, after a strong run at major award shows and film festivals around the world.

The Wagner Moura starrer is set in Brazil in the year 1977, a time when the country was facing unrest and fear. The story follows a tech expert who leaves behind a dark past and returns to his hometown of Recife, hoping to live in peace. But the city soon pulls him into danger, spying, and hard choices.

'The Secret Agent' is directed by Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonca Filho and stars Moura in the lead role. The film has received wide praise from critics and moviebuffs for its story, acting, and direction. It has earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor.

The film also performed well at Cannes, where Mendonca Filho won Best Director and Moura won Best Actor. Later, at the Golden Globes, Moura won Best Actor in a Drama, and the film won Best Foreign Language Film.

Lead actor Wagner Moura, who plays Marcelo in the film, said his character is not a usual hero but a man trying to stay human in a harsh world. He said he is happy that people in India will connect with the film's feelings and message.

"Marcelo is not a conventional hero; he is a man trying to remain humane in a world that constantly tests him. The response to the film has been overwhelming, and I'm excited for Indian audiences to connect with its emotional and political resonance," said Wagner as per a release.

The Secret Agent will hit theatres across India on February 27.

Interesting that it's set in 1977 Brazil. We have our own rich history of films about political unrest and personal struggle. Will be good to see a foreign perspective. Hope the subtitles are done well.

Four Oscar noms is no joke. This is the kind of content our multiplexes should get more often, instead of just the big Hollywood blockbusters. Supporting such films encourages distributors.

Respectfully, while I'm excited for the film, I hope the release isn't limited to just metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore. Tier 2 and 3 cities have avid cinema lovers too. Distributors, please take note!

The actor's quote resonates. "A man trying to remain humane in a world that constantly tests him" – that's a universal struggle, isn't it? Sounds like a powerful character study. Definitely booking my ticket.

Winning at Cannes and Globes is huge! Hope this opens the door for more award-season international films to get a proper theatrical release here. Our film culture is diverse enough to appreciate them. 🤞
