Northeast Frontier Railway marks historic first with direct Container Freight Train to Nepal

In a landmark achievement for India-Nepal rail connectivity, the first-ever direct commercial container freight train, comprising 40 wagons carrying a consignment of canola, completed its journey from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal recently, as per the release.
The historic movement marks the operationalisation of the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol and opens a new chapter in cross-border freight transportation.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, said that the train operated seamlessly under the revised transit framework, allowing direct rail movement of bulk cargo from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar without transhipment at the border.
"This is expected to significantly reduce transit time, logistics costs and cargo handling while improving trade efficiency between the two neighbouring countries. The achievement builds upon the broad-gauge rail link between Jogbani (India) and Biratnagar (Nepal) inaugurated in June 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the former Prime Minister of Nepal. Following the signing of the revised Letter of Exchange (LoE) in November 2025, direct commercial rail movement to Nepal has now become a reality," Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said.
He further said that this milestone highlights the growing role of Northeast Frontier Railway in strengthening international rail connectivity and facilitating seamless cross-border trade.
"The initiative is expected to boost bilateral commerce, improve logistics efficiency and further reinforce India's commitment to enhancing regional connectivity through modern railway infrastructure. Building on this historic achievement, NFR will continue to strengthen cross-border rail connectivity, enhance freight logistics and support the growing trade and economic partnership between India and Nepal through efficient, reliable and customer-focused railway services," Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said.

Great news for the Northeast region too! Hope this boosts not just Nepal's economy but also improves logistics for states like Assam and Bihar. Less transhipment means fewer delays and damages.
Finally some concrete progress on rail connectivity with Nepal! The revised protocol and direct trains will make trade smoother. But I hope the infrastructure at Biratnagar end is also upgraded to handle this volume efficiently. Don't want this to become another underutilised route.

Good move, but we need to see similar focus on passenger rail connectivity too. The Jogbani-Biratnagar link was inaugurated in 2023, but passenger services are still not regular. Trade is important, but people-to-people connections matter just as much!
This is excellent for bilateral trade! Reducing logistics costs will benefit both Indian exporters and Nepali importers. Also, using Kolkata Port instead of going through other routes is strategic. India should push for more such direct rail links with all neighbouring countries.
