NMC directs 70 medical colleges to immediately link CCTV systems with central monitoring network

The National Medical Commission has issued a public notice directing medical colleges and institutions under its purview to comply with mandatory CCTV installation and surveillance-sharing norms.
According to the notice, existing NMC regulations make it mandatory for medical colleges to install 25 cameras at prescribed locations, set up a Network Video Recorder (NVR), and maintain a 30-day playback of footage.
The notice cited UGMSR-2023 dated August 16, 2023, PGMSR-2023 (Amendment) dated February 2, 2026 and MARB Regulations 2023 dated June 2, 2023 to highlight that the directions have been communicated before.
Despite this, the Commission noted that several institutions have failed to fall in line. The notice states that the "NMC team has continuously followed up with Medical Colleges who have not followed above NMC regulations/guidelines for installation of CCTV system & has not shared its feed vide NVR but still some Medical Colleges have not yet linked their NVR with the Commission."
The NMC further asserted that "all such Medical Colleges/Institutions under NMC which are not complying with the above-referred regulations/guidelines are directed to comply the same on immediate basis."
The notice flagged 70 colleges and institutions for non-compliance, urging them to swiftly adopt the directive.

Good move, but 25 cameras and 30-day storage seems a bit excessive for college campuses. Also, who will monitor all this footage? The NMC team itself? Sounds like another unnecessary bureaucratic burden on already struggling private medical colleges. 🤔

This is long overdue! My cousin was studying in a private medical college in Karnataka and there were all sorts of irregularities during practical exams. Let's hope this CCTV network brings some transparency. But NMC needs to ensure that colleges don't just install dummy cameras to comply. Chaar din ki baarish aur phir sab normal? Hope not!
It's 2026 and they're only now enforcing 2023 rules? The pace of bureaucracy here is frustrating. I work in healthcare IT and we've had centralized monitoring systems for years. That said, the concept is good - centralizing 25 cameras per college will help NMC detect cheating during exams and monitor clinical training quality. Just hope the network infrastructure in rural colleges can handle it.
While surveillance is important for quality assurance, I worry about the privacy of students and patients in these settings. Will the footage be accessible to students? What about data breaches? Also, 30 days storage seems arbitrary - maybe they need longer
