Brasilia, July 7

Neymar's father penned an emotional message for his son after the Brazil forward announced his retirement from international football following the team's FIFA World Cup 2026 exit, urging him to continue playing the sport he loves, according to Sports Center Brasil.

Taking to social media, Neymar's father shared a heartfelt note addressed to the Selecão's iconic No. 10 jersey wearer, encouraging him not to walk away from football and to continue his journey on the pitch.

"'Go back to playing soccer'!" Neymar's father wrote in his message to his son, as quoted by Sports Center Brasil on X.

Neymar announced his retirement from international football after the five-time world champions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium.

He finished his international career as the all-time leading scorer for Brazil.

The 34-year-old forward brought the curtain down on his international career moments after Brazil's hopes of a sixth World Cup title were ended by Erling Haaland's late brace, with Neymar scoring a stoppage-time penalty that proved only a consolation.

Reflecting on the end of his journey with the national team, Neymar told reporters, as quoted by ESPN UK, "I tried, I tried. Now it's over. I started here; I finished here."

Neymar's penalty, converted in the 10th minute of added time after Leo Ostigard was penalised for a foul on Casemiro, was his first goal of the tournament. It also took his international tally to 80 goals and 59 assists in 130 appearances for Brazil, further extending his record as the nation's all-time leading scorer.

During his time with the Selecao, Neymar helped the country lift the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2013 and won the Olympic gold medal on home soil at the Rio 2016 Games.

The veteran forward's participation in the World Cup had remained uncertain until the final stages of squad selection because of fitness concerns.

However, head coach Carlo Ancelotti included him in Brazil's 26-man squad, hoping his experience would inspire another deep run in the tournament.

Instead, Brazil's campaign ended in dramatic fashion. Norway, appearing in the knockout stages with growing confidence, absorbed sustained Brazilian pressure before Haaland broke the deadlock in the 79th minute with a towering header from Andreas Schjelderup's cross.

For Brazil, the defeat marked a seventh consecutive World Cup knockout loss to European opposition and their earliest World Cup exit since 1990, while Neymar's emotional farewell closed the chapter on an era that defined Brazilian football for more than a decade.

Emotional moment for sure. Neymar was always flashy but people forget how consistent he was for Brazil. 80 goals in 130 games is insane. That said, I think retiring at 34 is too soon—he could have played the next Copa America. Maybe the Norway defeat just broke him mentally.

One thing I respect about Neymar is how much he loved playing for his country. Even with all the criticism about diving and drama, he always showed up. His father's note is so touching—that's the kind of support every sportsman needs. Wishing him the best for whatever comes next. 🙏

Honestly, India doesn't have many players who could dominate like Neymar did internationally. We're still struggling to qualify for the World Cup. See what Brazil achieves with all that talent, and yet the pressure is so high that a star like him retires early. Makes you think about mental health in sports.

Sad way to go out. Neymar deserved a proper send-off, not a round of 16 exit. But that's football—cruel as always. His legacy is secure though. Olympic gold, Confederations Cup, and he's Brazil's top scorer. Yaar, I'll miss those tricks and flicks on the international stage.

While I feel for Neymar, I also think Brazil's management should take some blame. They relied too much on one player. As an Indian, I see parallels with how we over-depend on certain players. But Neymar's father's message is beautiful—"Go
