New Delhi-Faridabad MEMU rail service approved on CM Rekha Gupta's request to Centre

New MEMU rail service approved between Delhi and Faridabad following CM Rekha Gupta's request to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, offering faster commutes.

"The new service would provide significant relief to thousands of people who commute daily between Delhi and Faridabad - Rekha Gupta"

New Delhi, May 8

Following Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's request, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw approved the operation of a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit rail service between the National Capital and Faridabad, an official said on Friday.

A Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) is a modern electric passenger service whose trains generally run at speeds of 100-110 kmph.

Welcoming the MEMU approval, the Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Railway Minister, saying the new service would provide significant relief to thousands of people who commute daily between Delhi and Faridabad.

The Chief Minister said a large number of people from Faridabad and nearby areas travel to Delhi every day for work, education, business and other purposes.

For a long time, residents and regular passengers had been demanding additional and more convenient rail connectivity. With the existing transport network under heavy pressure, commuters often faced overcrowding, delays and inconvenience, she said in a statement.

Chief Minister Gupta said the introduction of the MEMU service would offer commuters a faster, more affordable and more accessible public transport option.

The Chief Minister added that the Delhi government has been working closely with the Centre to address day-to-day commuting issues and improve transport infrastructure for citizens.

She said projects related to transport and connectivity in Delhi and the National Capital Region are gaining momentum under the 'double-engine government'.

According to her, the new rail service will not only save passengers time but also help reduce pressure on road traffic.

A Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) is a modern electric passenger train service operated by Indian Railways for short- and medium-distance travel on main railway routes.

Unlike conventional trains, MEMU trains do not have a separate locomotive. Instead, the train is powered through motor coaches, making it more efficient on routes with frequent stops. These services are primarily designed to improve connectivity between cities and nearby towns rather than intra-city travel.

Great move by CM Rekha Gupta to push for this. But I hope the Delhi government also fixes the last-mile connectivity issues. What's the use of a fast train if we can't easily reach the stations from our homes or offices? 🤔

This double-engine government is definitely working! PM Modi and CM Rekha Gupta have shown they care about the common man. MEMU trains are much better than the old rattan coaches—faster and more comfortable. Hopefully, more such services will be announced for other NCR routes too.

About time! Faridabad-Delhi route has been neglected for years. I remember my father used to complain about the overcrowded trains back in the 90s, and nothing changed. At least now there's some hope. But will the fares be affordable? That's the key question for daily wage earners like us.

I'm cautiously optimistic. MEMU trains are great in theory, but Indian Railways needs to ensure proper maintenance and punctuality. Also, the existing infrastructure at Faridabad station is quite outdated. Will they upgrade it to handle the increased traffic? Let's see if the follow-through matches the announcement.

Ye to bahut achhi khabar hai! 🎉 I work in Nehru Place, and commuting from Faridabad is a nightmare. The roads are always jammed, and the buses are packed like sardines. If this MEMU service can cut down travel time and offer some comfort, it will be a game-changer. Thank you, CM and Railway Minister!
