"China and India are neighbours that cannot be moved apart. - Ambassador Xu Feihong"

New Delhi, April 1

China's Ambassador to India Xu Feihong on Wednesday underscored the importance of stable and cooperative relations between Beijing and New Delhi as the two countries marked the 76th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

In a post on X, Xu said, "China and India are neighbours that cannot be moved apart," emphasising that it is in the mutual interest of both countries to remain "good-neighbourly friends and partners that help each other succeed".

He described such cooperation as key to realising the vision of a "Dragon-Elephant Tang".

The ambassador noted that China stands ready to strengthen strategic alignment with India, deepen practical cooperation across sectors, and expand people-to-people exchanges. He also highlighted the importance of closer coordination in multilateral forums to advance the interests of the Global South.

Earlier on Tuesday, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Mumbai, Qin Jie, spoke about the future of India-China ties and expressed optimism as he recalled the meeting between PM Modi and President Xi Jinping.

He added that the BRICS Summit, which will take place in New Delhi, will provide an opportunity to further deepen ties.

The Consul General told reporters, "For the future of the relationship, we are moving in the correct direction in India-China relations under the leadership of our leaders. They have met each other twice in the last two years."

Speaking about the BRICS Summit, which will take place in India this year, he added, "This year, the BRICS summit will be held in Delhi, and next year it will be held in China. This will give us special opportunities to deepen our connection and friendship and make progress for the benefit of our people and stability of the whole world..."

Earlier in March, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for enhanced cooperation between New Delhi and Beijing during a news conference held on the sidelines of the fourth session of the 14th National People's Congress in Beijing.

The senior diplomat emphasised the importance of bilateral collaboration, stating that "India and China must step up and support each other's presidency of BRICS over the next two years." These comments come at a time of significant global upheaval, specifically amid the escalating US-Iran conflict in West Asia.

Highlighting the potential for a unified front between the two Asian giants, Wang Yi underscored the impact their partnership could have on the international stage. "Together, we can bring new hope to the Global South," he stated, suggesting that a coordinated leadership within the BRICS bloc would serve as a stabilising force for developing nations.

As an expat living in Delhi, the emphasis on people-to-people exchanges is encouraging. Cultural understanding is key. More student exchanges, tourism, and collaborative projects in tech or climate change could build genuine bridges between the citizens of both nations.

Cooperation for the Global South is where India and China can truly make a difference. We have similar challenges. If we work together in BRICS on issues like fair trade, technology transfer, and sustainable development, it benefits billions. This is the way forward. 🤝

The "Dragon-Elephant Tang" vision sounds poetic, but the reality on the ground is complex. While economic and multilateral cooperation is necessary, we must never compromise on our security. Trust has to be earned, not just spoken about in diplomatic posts.

Absolutely right. Geography is permanent. We have to find a way to live as peaceful neighbours. Our ancient civilisations have coexisted for millennia. In today's unstable world, a stable India-China relationship is crucial not just for us, but for all of Asia.

The timing of these warm statements is interesting, given the global tensions mentioned. Perhaps there's a genuine realisation that strategic autonomy and collaboration between Asia's giants is better than being pawns in other powers' games. Cautiously optimistic.
