Actor Naomi Watts has bagged a pivotal role in a romantic drama titled 'Margot & Rudi'.

As per Deadline, Anthony Fabian's directorial tells the true story of ballet legends Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. The film has been boarded by world sales agency WestEnd Films.

The story unfolds when Fonteyn, the greatest ballerina in the West, is 42 and sensing her career is over. Nureyev is 23, a rebellious Soviet defector -- magnetic, explosive, unstoppable. Together, they ignite the stage and become icons of the Swinging Sixties.

Fonteyn is reborn by Nureyev's wild energy, but their bond is complicated by her marriage and his affair with another dancer. To preserve what they have, they will risk everything for one defining ballet--because the only place they can truly be together... is on stage.

Watts, who studied dance before becoming an actress, will star as Fonteyn. She broke through with her performance in "Mulholland Drive" and earned Academy Award nominations for her leading roles in "21 Grams" and "The Impossible."

She will be next seen in "The Housewife," as well as Cody Fern's untitled debut feature film, with Sarah Paulson, Dianne Wiest and Odessa A'Zion.

Interesting casting! Watts is great, but I wonder if they considered a slightly younger actress? Fonteyn was sensing her career was over at 42, but Watts is 55. The age dynamic with Nureyev is so crucial to the story. Hope the makeup and performance bridge that gap convincingly.

The story of an older artist finding new life through a younger, fiery talent is universal. Reminds me of some guru-shishya paramparas in Indian arts, though of course the romantic context is different. The "only on stage" part is so tragically poetic. 🎭

As a dance enthusiast, I'm thrilled! Fonteyn and Nureyev are legends. It's high time their story got a major film. Watts has the grace and intensity for it. Hope the choreography and filming do justice to the magic they created on stage.

Good to see stories about powerful artistic partnerships. In our Bollywood, we have iconic jodis like Amitabh-Rekha or Shah Rukh-Kajol whose off-screen chemistry fueled on-screen magic. This seems like that, but with ballet. Will watch for sure.

The premise is solid, but I hope the film doesn't just glamorize the affair and forget the real people involved—Fonteyn's husband, the other dancer. Real-life relationships are messy. A respectful, nuanced portrayal would be best. Fingers crossed!
