Nagaland CM Rio Pushes Naga Peace, Vande Mataram Review, and Census 2027

Participating the motion of thanks on the Governor's address in the Assembly, the Chief Minister on the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA), stated that the government remains guided by the basic principles laid down in the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and looks forward to the continued cooperation and active participation of the Eastern Naga People's Organisation in taking the process forward.

Addressing the issue of playing Vande Mataram, the National Song, in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said the views expressed by legislators have been duly noted and respected. While acknowledging the historical significance of the song, he emphasised that the nation's strength lies in its diversity, secular values and adherence to constitutional principles.

Rio proposed that the matter be referred to a select committee of the House for detailed examination, including legal consultation, before arriving at a considered decision.

The Chief Minister also sought the cooperation of elected members, civil society organisations and all stakeholders to ensure the smooth conduct of the Census 2027 exercise in the state.

A comprehensive briefing session for members and party functionaries will be organised shortly to sensitise them on the various aspects of the exercise, he said.

On extortion and law and order issues, Rio asserted that the government will maintain zero tolerance towards criminal activities and continue firm measures to safeguard peace and security.

Regarding the rationalisation and redeployment of teachers, he said the issue is under detailed examination, explaining that demographic shifts and declining student enrolment in certain areas have necessitated measures to ensure utilisation of teaching personnel.

Acknowledging challenges in the marketing of agricultural produce, Rio noted that the government is exploring ways to strengthen institutional mechanisms to provide farmers with improved market access and price support.

On unemployment, he highlighted ongoing skill development and entrepreneurship initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between education and employability, stressing the importance of promoting vocational and technical skills aligned with emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and technology.

Rio also condemned incidents of racial discrimination against people from the Northeast, stating that such acts run contrary to the spirit of unity and inclusiveness. Reaffirming the government's commitment to protecting the dignity and rights of citizens, he called for collective responsibility in upholding these values.

With regard to the Foothill Road project, he said that discussions have been held with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, though issues related to land acquisition and forest clearance remain a challenge. He appealed to landowners and stakeholders to extend their cooperation to facilitate progress on the project.
