My parents' companionship is model for younger generation: Kumaraswamy on mother's demise

Bengaluru, July 19

Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy on Sunday said the lifelong companionship shared by his parents, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and his late wife Chennamma, stands as an example for the younger generation, as leaders cutting across party lines continued to pay their last respects to the departed matriarch.

Chennamma, 85, passed away at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru on Saturday after battling respiratory complications. Her demise has drawn condolences from leaders across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and several Union and state ministers.

"My parents' companionship is a model for the younger generation," Kumaraswamy said while speaking to the media at the Padmanabhanagar residence in Bengaluru.

It can be noted that H.D. Deve Gowda and his wife, Chennamma, were married for 72 years, from their wedding on May 25, 1954, until her passing on July 18, 2026. Their marriage spanned more than seven decades, ending with her death at the age of 85.

Kumaraswamy announced that Chennamma's mortal remains would be kept for public viewing at the family's Padmanabhanagar residence on Sunday. Thereafter, the body will be taken to Hassan via Nelamangala and Holenarasipura. He said the mortal remains would be kept for public homage in Hassan later in the day, and the final rites would be performed at 11 a.m. on Monday near the Ranganathaswamy Temple.

Recalling his mother's affection, Kumaraswamy said she had a special bond with him but treated all her children equally. "My mother had immense love and affection for me. I have tried to imbibe her values and concern for the poor. At the same time, she treated all her children alike," he said.

He said he spent as much time as possible with his mother despite his busy political schedule and remembered the guidance she offered him throughout his life.

"Many times, she counselled me on how to move forward in life and politics. Those moments and her words can never be forgotten," Kumaraswamy said.

He noted that leaders from across political parties have been visiting to pay their respects, remembering Chennamma's warmth and hospitality over the years.

"Several leaders, irrespective of political affiliation, have received her hospitality for decades. Everyone remembers the care and affection she showed them. That is why people from all parties are coming to pay their last respects," he said.

Reflecting on his parents' life together, Kumaraswamy said their marriage and companionship embodied the true meaning of life and commitment.

"In today's society, my parents' married life and companionship are a model for the new generation. They showed what partnership and commitment truly mean," he said.

He further observed that despite H.D. Deve Gowda serving in several high offices, including Chief Minister, Prime Minister and Leader of Opposition, Chennamma always preferred to remain away from the public spotlight.

"Even when my father became Chief Minister, Prime Minister and held several other important positions, she never sought publicity and remained within the family, quietly supporting him throughout his journey," Kumaraswamy added.

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who have been political rivals of the Deve Gowda family, visited H.D. Deve Gowda's residence on Saturday night, spent time with him, and offered their condolences.

Political leaders also recalled how Chennamma had warmly hosted and cared for Siddaramaiah during his visits to the family residence over the years.

The bond between Deve Gowda and Chennamma was well known across the state. Deve Gowda broke down when Chennamma's condition turned critical a day before her demise and remarked that everything was in the hands of God.

Later, he was seen weeping beside her mortal remains. In an emotional moment, Deve Gowda reportedly said, "Why did you not take me along with you?"
