MP govt to open farm machinery rental shop in each assembly constituency

The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to open at least one farm machinery rental shop in every Assembly constituency to improve farmers' access to modern agricultural equipment, particularly for small and marginal landholders.
The initiative is being taken on the directions of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav as part of the state's focus on farm mechanisation during the "Year of Farmers' Welfare".
According to the state government, 5,260 farm machinery rental centres are already operational across the state. It plans to set up around 1,060 new rental shops every year to expand the network.
The state government said the initiative aims to make modern agricultural machinery available to small and marginal farmers at affordable service charges while also creating opportunities for rural entrepreneurs.
The move comes as Vidisha district is emerging as a major centre for manufacturing agricultural implements. Around 150 units in the district manufacture equipment such as cultivators, ploughs, graders, levellers and hydraulic trolleys, which are supplied to farmers in Madhya Pradesh, other states and several foreign countries.
Local manufacturers said they primarily supply machinery to farmers in Vidisha and nearby districts, while also catering to customers in other states. They added that government support and growing demand have helped the sector expand in recent years.
"The government is working to improve farmers' access to modern machinery while encouraging local manufacturing and employment in the agricultural equipment sector," the state government said.
The expansion of farm machinery rental centres is expected to reduce the cost of mechanised farming for small farmers, who often cannot afford to purchase expensive equipment, while strengthening the state's agricultural machinery ecosystem.

Interesting policy. In Canada we have similar co-operative machinery sharing programs that work well for small farms. It reduces costs and waste. I hope MP's model includes proper maintenance schedules and insurance for the rented equipment, otherwise breakdowns could hurt farmers during critical planting seasons.
This is good for small farmers but the real question is implementation. In many districts, such schemes get hijacked by local big farmers or middlemen. The government needs a transparent online booking system with GPS tracking of machinery. Also, what about training farmers to use modern equipment? Without that, rental shops won't help much.
Bahut accha hai! 🚜 I am from Vidisha and our district already supplies machinery to many states. With this scheme, we will get more business and farmers will benefit. But the government should also promote local repair shops alongside rental centres. In our village, getting a tractor repaired means going 30 km away.
Interesting comparison to North America. We have Farm Credit Canada programs that finance equipment sharing. The key is scale—MP needs enough machines per constituency to avoid bottlenecks during peak season. Also, will the rental include operators? Many farmers may not know how to use modern planters or sprayers safely.
