Monsoon Session: Lok Sabha to take up Supreme Court Judges Amendment Bill

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are scheduled to take up key legislative business on Friday during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, with several important Bills listed for consideration, passing and introduction.
In the Lok Sabha, the government will move the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 for consideration and passing. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will move the Bill, which seeks to further amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956.
The legislative business will be taken up along with a statutory resolution moved by Opposition MPs Sougata Ray, NK Premachandran and Dean Kuriakose, seeking disapproval of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, promulgated by the President on May 16.
During the Private Members' Business scheduled from 3:30 PM to 6 PM, several Bills are listed for introduction.
The Bills listed in Lok Sabha include proposals related to constitutional amendments, welfare of senior citizens, protection of fishermen, privacy rights, renewable energy resources, cultural heritage, disaster management, cow slaughter prohibition, and welfare of students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.
Among the Bills listed for introduction are the Kashmiri Pandits (Recourse, Restitution, Rehabilitation and Resettlement) Bill, 2025, to be introduced by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, and the SPANDAN Bill, 2026, by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, aimed at strengthening the National Mission on Cultural Mapping.
Before the legislative proceedings, the Lok Sabha agenda includes Question Hour, laying of papers by ministers and statements of the Public Accounts Committee.
Congress MPs KC Venugopal and Amar Singh are scheduled to lay statements related to action taken reports of the Public Accounts Committee on issues including the Indian Coast Guard, Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, Indian Railways' suburban train services, narcotics management, food safety implementation and defence-related procurement.
The House will also take up reports of the Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, including reports on the Ministry of Women and Child Development, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and higher education.
Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, the government will introduce and consider the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move the Bill for introduction and later seek consideration and passing of the legislation.
The Upper House will also see the introduction of the Mithila Central University Bill, 2026, by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, which seeks to establish a Central University in the Mithila region for promotion and preservation of Mithila culture, heritage, Maithili language and Tirhuta script.
Other Bills listed for introduction in Rajya Sabha include the Cosmetics Bill, 2026, moved by Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra, aimed at regulating cosmetic products and ensuring consumer safety; the Marriage Equality Bill, 2026, by TMC MP Derek O'Brien, seeking amendments to marriage laws; and the Media Transparency and Public Trust Bill, 2026, by CPI(M) MP V Sivadasan, focusing on transparency in ownership, funding and functioning of media organisations.
The Upper House will also consider the Climate Resilient Agriculture and Farmers Protection Bill, 2025, moved by Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury, which seeks to establish a national mission to address the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and protect farmers' interests.
The day's proceedings will begin at 11 AM in both Houses, with government business scheduled until the afternoon, followed by Private Members' Legislative Business.

The Marriage Equality Bill by Derek O'Brien is long overdue! India needs to recognize the rights of LGBTQ+ couples. We can't call ourselves a progressive democracy if we deny basic legal protections to a section of our society. Hope this gets serious discussion, not just political posturing. 🏳️🌈
As a farmer from Punjab, I'm most interested in the Climate Resilient Agriculture Bill by Renuka Chowdhury. We've been hit hard by erratic monsoons and extreme heat the last few years. If Parliament can pass something that genuinely helps us adapt, that would be real service to the nation. Not just speeches in Delhi.
I'm an expat living in Bangalore, and I find the SPANDAN Bill interesting – cultural mapping is important for preserving India's diversity. But will it be implemented effectively? So many well-intentioned bills die in bureaucratic red tape. Let's see how this one fares. Also, the cosmetics bill is welcome; we need better regulation of products sold here. 🧴
Opposition MPs moving a resolution against the judges ordinance shows the usual political games. Instead of this tit-for-tat, why not debate the actual merits? More judges are needed – everyone agrees. But this shouldn't become a tool for the government to pack the court. Need careful scrutiny of appointments, not just numbers.
The Media Transparency Bill by CPI(M) is a good idea but let's be honest – will Parliament ever pass something that forces media owners to disclose funding? Our news channels are too cozy with political parties. Still, kudos to the MP for bringing it up
