Luka Modric Signs Contract Extension with AC Milan Until 2027

Luka Modric has signed a one-year contract extension with AC Milan, keeping him at the club until June 2027. The 41-year-old Croatian midfielder joined AC Milan in 2025 after a legendary 13-year stint with Real Madrid. He made 37 appearances and scored two goals for the Rossoneri last season, helping them finish fifth in Serie A. Modric will play under new head coach Ruben Amorim in the upcoming season.

Milan, July 24

Luka Modric will continue his playing career with AC Milan for another year, as the Croatian veteran signed a contract extension with the Rossoneri, the Serie A club said.

Modric, who turns 41 in September, joined AC Milan last year after 13 seasons with Real Madrid. His original contract had expired on June 30. He scored two goals in 37 appearances for Milan in a season when they finished fifth in Serie A and only reached the last-16 stage of the Coppa Italia.

He had previously stated he would make a decision on whether to stay at the club or retire after the 2026 World Cup, where Croatia lost to Portugal and exited in the round of 32.

"AC Milan is pleased to announce that Luka Modric has signed a contract for a further season, until June 30, 2027," read a club statement.

"A key figure in the Rossoneri midfield since his arrival, Luka has brought his experience and quality to the service of the team, both on and off the pitch, with humility and great passion. One of the finest and most iconic players in world football, the Croatian will continue his journey in the Rossoneri shirt - with which he made 37 appearances and scored two goals last season - with the ambition to reach new, important milestones."

The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner will continue to wear the No. 14 shirt next season.

Modric arrived at Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and overcame a difficult start to etch his name into Real Madrid folklore. With nearly 600 appearances and almost 30 major trophies-including a record six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns-Modric's impact has been nothing short of legendary.

His 2018 Ballon d'Or win, breaking the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly, symbolised his quiet dominance on the global stage. Known for his vision, control, and elegance on the ball, Modric has been the soul of Madrid's midfield, orchestrating countless victories with grace and determination.

In 2025, he ended his 13 years of association with the Bernabeu and signed with AC Milan. This season, he will play under former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, who replaced the sacked Massimiliano Allegri in June.

I know he's a legend but honestly, I think it's time for him to retire gracefully. Last season he only played 37 matches with just 2 goals for Milan. Is this really helping the team's future? 😕 Indian clubs often face similar issues with aging foreign stars.

Modric is an institution! Breaking the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly for Ballon d'Or was no joke. Milan might not be at their peak right now but having a player like him in the dressing room is priceless. We need more such role models in Indian football too!

Remember how he owned the midfield in that 2018 World Cup? Pure magic ✨ Milan finishing 5th in Serie A and only reaching Coppa Italia last 16 shows they need more than just a 40+ veteran. Hope it works out but I'm skeptical.

Great move by Ruben Amorim to keep Modric. As someone who followed Sporting CP before his United stint, I know he values experienced players who can mentor young talents. Modric's vision is still top-class even if his legs aren't what they used to be.

Honestly, I feel a bit sad watching legends hang on too long like this. Modric gave everything to Real Madrid - 600 appearances, 6 UCL titles, Ballon d'Or. It's like watching Sachin Tendulkar's last few years where the magic faded but the name remained.
