Meghna Gulzar explains why Kareena Kapoor starrer 'Daayra' required authentic, real characters
Mumbai, July 6
Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar has opened up about the creative vision behind her upcoming film 'Daayra,' which stars Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead role.
In an exclusive quote shared with IANS, the writer-producer shared that authenticity was at the heart of the project, with every character carefully crafted to feel relatable, believable, and true to life.
Talking about the casting process behind 'Daayra,' Meghna Gulzar said, "We needed to create a world that was authentic, with characters from different walks of life that were identifiable and real. Our Casting Director Taran Bajaj and team, have done a superb job of bringing the world of Daayra to life. As has the team of Assistant Directors who have meticulously cast and designed the background actors that appear in the film - even if it is to just walk by."
Taran Bajaj, Casting Director of 'Daayra,' added, "Meghna's brief was to keep the world authentic and real, which meant Daayra needed actors with depth, sincerity and a strong understanding of human psychology. We cast 75 speaking roles, with each character approached from Meghna's creative lens."
"One of the biggest challenges was casting across age groups, including a 17-year-old debutant in a pivotal role. From the National School of Drama and FTII to local theatre groups, we auditioned actors from across the country. The cast brings together talent from Maharashtra, UP, Bihar, Delhi, Kerala and MP, making it a true pan-India ensemble. The responsibility was to seamlessly blend diverse regions, languages and dialects of different cast members into one solid, single unit."
It is being said that around 90 theatre actors, including performers trained at prestigious institutions such as the National School of Drama (NSD), were considered before the film's final cast was finalized. Even actors appearing in just a single scene or delivering only one line had to go through a rigorous audition and selection process to secure their roles.
On a related note, "Daayra" also features Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film is slated to hit theatres on 18th September.

This is impressive but slightly concerning - 90 theatre actors considered and only a few selected? I hope the film doesn't end up feeling too polished or artificial despite all this effort. Sometimes over-authenticity can backfire. Still, Meghna's track record with 'Talvar' and 'Raazi' gives me hope. Let's see on Sept 18th.
Great to see NSD and FTII actors getting such opportunities! As someone from theatre background, this is heartening. But I wonder - are these "authentic" characters based on real stories from Maharashtra or UP? The film's premise sounds intriguing. Kareena as a layered character? Sign me up! ✨
Meghna Gulzar is one of the few Indian directors who truly understands nuance. The fact that even background actors had to audition rigorously shows her commitment. However, I hope the film's story matches this level of preparation. Authenticity is great, but a weak script can ruin everything. Fingers crossed! 🤞
This is exactly what Bollywood needs - moving away from the same 10 faces and giving platform to diverse talent. Prithviraj Sukumaran's inclusion adds such depth. Can we also talk about a 17-year-old debutant in a pivotal role? That takes guts from a director. Hope the young actor shines! 🌟
Respect to Meghna for this level of dedication. But let's be honest - with Kareena Kapoor as the lead, can it really be "authentic"? She's a superstar and brings baggage. Though I must admit
