Meghalaya's future being built through world-class infrastructure: CM Sangma

Shillong, July 14

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday said the ambitious infrastructure projects coming up in the New Shillong Township are laying the foundation for the state's future, asserting that investments in modern administrative, commercial and sports infrastructure would improve governance, generate employment and enhance the quality of life of the people.

Reviewing the progress of key projects under construction in New Shillong, Sangma directed all executing agencies to maintain strict quality standards, ensure close coordination and expedite work without compromising safety or prescribed timelines.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by the Chief Secretary, senior officials and representatives of executing agencies, inspected the New Secretariat Complex, Unity Mall, the Sports Complex at Umsawli and other ongoing projects.

Addressing officials during the review, Sangma said the projects are part of the government's long-term vision to create modern public infrastructure capable of supporting Meghalaya's growing administrative and economic needs.

He said the projects being developed in New Shillong are laying the foundation for Meghalaya's future, and that investments in modern administrative, commercial and sports infrastructure would not only improve governance and public services but also generate economic opportunities, create employment and enhance the quality of life for the people of the state.

At the New Secretariat Complex, Sangma reviewed the pace of construction and stressed that the facility should be completed within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining the highest construction standards. Once operational, the complex will bring government departments under one roof to improve coordination, administrative efficiency and citizen-centric service delivery.

Reviewing the Unity Mall project, the Chief Minister said the facility would provide a dedicated platform for artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs, self-help groups and local producers to market Meghalaya's products.

He said the project would strengthen local enterprises, boost tourism and create sustainable livelihood opportunities across the state.

During his visit to the Sports Complex at Umsawli, Sangma reiterated the government's commitment to developing world-class sports infrastructure for the youth.

He said the modern training and competition facilities would help nurture sporting talent and further establish Meghalaya as a major sporting destination in the Northeast.

The Chief Minister said the government remains committed to ensuring the timely completion of all transformative projects so that citizens can benefit from modern, efficient and sustainable infrastructure at the earliest.

As someone from outside the Northeast, it's great to see states like Meghalaya investing in infrastructure. The Unity Mall concept for local artisans could really boost tourism and handicrafts. Hope they also look at improving road connectivity to these areas.

Sports complex for youth is wonderful! But these projects need transparency - local contractors should get preference, not just big outside companies. Also, let's not forget basic infrastructure like rural roads and electricity in villages. Development should reach everyone, not just Shillong. 🙏

The Unity Mall concept sounds innovative - creating a platform for local weavers and entrepreneurs. But I hope this isn't just a photo-op project. Need to see actual timelines and budget allocations. Also, environmental impact assessments should be priority in a hilly state like Meghalaya.

Good to see CM Sangma personally reviewing projects. The New Secretariat will save citizens from running between different departments. But I wish similar attention was given to healthcare infrastructure - our PHCs in rural areas need urgent upgrades too. Development should be holistic! 🌟

As a development professional who has worked in Northeast India, I appreciate the focus on quality standards and timelines. But I'm concerned about displacement of local communities due to these large projects. Transparent rehabilitation policies must be in place. Also, how will these projects be sustained post-completion?
