Meghalaya govt prepares for cherry blossom festival

The Meghalaya government has intensified preparations for the upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival, with the East Khasi Hills district administration reviewing infrastructure and crowd-management arrangements ahead of the two-day event in November, officials said on Friday.
The festival is scheduled for November 20 and 21 at the New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mawkhanu, New Shillong, where popular artistes from outside the state are expected to perform.
As part of the preparations, officials from the district administration inspected the venue to assess the facilities required for the smooth conduct of the festival. Officials identified traffic management, visitor movement, and essential public amenities as key areas of focus.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said the administration was working on the arrangements and would ensure adequate security measures to safeguard visitors and facilitate their movement during the event.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival has emerged as one of Meghalaya's prominent tourism and cultural events, combining the region's seasonal natural beauty with music, food, art, and entertainment.
Launched in 2016, the festival coincides with the autumn flowering of Himalayan cherry blossom trees, which transform parts of Shillong and surrounding areas with pink blooms. Unlike Japan's well-known spring cherry blossom season, Shillong's blossoms appear during the autumn months, creating a distinctive attraction for visitors.
The festival aims to promote tourism, showcase Meghalaya's landscape, and provide a platform for cultural and creative expressions. Over the years, the event has featured performances by local, national, and international artistes, alongside culinary showcases and other cultural activities. Its combination of nature and contemporary entertainment has helped establish it as an important event on Meghalaya's tourism calendar.
The administration's focus on traffic regulation, public movement, and security aims to support the expected visitor turnout and ensure festival activities are conducted in an organised manner.
With the November dates approaching, preparations at the New Shillong venue are expected to remain a priority for the district administration and other agencies involved in the event.
